Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

I wonder why the Metro XFI gets 43/51 MPG whereas the smart fortwo gets 33/41 MPG....

The Metro is only ~150 lbs lighter and engine technology has increased greatly in the last 15 years.

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

I have actually been actively searching for one in my area to combat these gas prices. Park the Caddy along w/ the Baja and drive me a clunker. All I have found though are Prizm's which might be my next purchase!!

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

I've always thought the Metro to be a cute car. And only 49 hp? You'll need to give it 2 miles to get to highway speed.

Probably because they made the Smart extremely tall so it doesn't feel like your driving around in a tuna can. It makes it feel much more roomy than it actually is but has to hurt the aero. If you look at the car from the front you would never know it is actually so short. Being so short may help the weight but the wind doesn't car about the length nearly as much as the height or width.

The most disappointing part of the Smart car is that after looking at it you would think it gets 50 mpg when in reality it does no better than a Civic that doesn't have nearly the compromises.

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

Remember the Smart wasn't built for fuel economy, it was built to take up the least amount of road space. It's designed for congestion and parking, not to combat prices at the pump.

Unfortunately, a LOT of people believe it was designed for just that purpose, to get good fuel economy.
And they won't believe you when you tell them that it doesn't get an amazing fuel economy rating.

That makes a lot more sense then because I always wondered why they did that if the main reason for buying the car was for economy.

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

A few years ago there was a guy around here who drove a red metro with a stand-up Mercedes-Benz emblem on the hood. Maybe he was on to something.

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

It seems like great fuel ecomomy should be a by-product of the smarts small and lightweight design. I'd say the gas mileage has room for improvement with a more efficient engine.

Re: Geo Metros now popular??!

That is why I still own my Prizm. I could most likely make a easy $800.00.

I just bought plugs, and wires for my caprice. I am hoping to up the mileage on it too.
