Cool Architecture

I've always had a thing for architecture, so every now and then I go on an internet hunt for some sites that can feed my interests. I'm big on the extravagant and a bit over the top, a million dollar home treehouse, underwater living, structures that match their environment...structures that look nothing like their environment. I dont know, I suppose anything that veers away from the norm to put it simply.

Here is one I came across today, alot of pictures, great designs. If anyone else knows of any good sites, post some links up here!

I've always liked this house. Its in the mountains to the west of Denver Colorado. It was also in The Sleeper. It looks like a space ship sticking up from the trees when you drive by it on I70.

Re: Cool Architecture

Everything F.L. Wright designed counts as cool in my book, especially one of his last creations, the out-of-this-world Marin County Civic Center!

Re: Cool Architecture

mgescuro, all those pictures you posted are from the same proposed design, right? It's really cool looking, I like it a lot.

Re: Cool Architecture

I have always had a thing for architecture, no matter what the style, except for Brutalist. Brutalism is rather depressing.

Here is a skyscraper in Dubai called The Lighthouse. One side of the building will have 4,000 photovoltaic panels for energy generation.

Re: Cool Architecture

Cool, thanks for posting all those different pics. I think I like the one you posted first the best, I hate Rogers Stirk Harbor's proposal. Yuck.

Re: Cool Architecture

Let's not forget Burj-Al ARab Hotel in Dubai.

Personally, I love sweeping modern architecture, but I'm a very big fan of Beaux Arts. It's been about 80 years since a new Beaux Arts style building was built in the US... but I love it anyways.

The airport here is great too.
It's the world's largest building to be build on base isolators -- essentially building shock absorbers to protect against earthquakes. The building is designed to break off from the domestic terminal structure and "roll" with the quake.
It is also the largest international terminal in North America.

Calatrava does some interesting designs.
Richard Meier's not bad either.

Yeah, Calatrava does some interesting stuff.
Too bad he pulled out of the Transbay Tower competition... then again... his design for a transit hub in NYC kinda looks like an afro comb....

And his Chicago skyscraper looks like a big drill bit.
