"Shift Up" light in Saabs

I have a Saab with a manual transmission, and it has the "shift up" light next to the tachometer.

The light seems to work OK in 1st and 2nd gear (comes on around 3500 rpm or so), but in higher gears it seems the car always wants me to shift up.

I'll be cruising at around 40 mph in 4th gear and about 1800 rpm and the thing wants me to shift to 5th. I don't know if other people actually drive it that way, but I don't.

I guess it's fairly easy to ignore, but does anyone else have a problem with this light? I don't really see the point of it and it can get kind of annoying. Do newer Saabs have it?

I have the same annoyance with my 98 Chevy pickup 5 speed. Aside from disconnecting it, I've been told there's no way to make it go away without messing with the computer. I just have learned to live with it.

Re: "Shift Up" light in Saabs

It's telling you when to shift for best gas mileage which makes the car feel doggy because you are keeping the RPM's artificially low. I would think that there is a fix for it because there is a fix for other GM cars with this same light. Someone more familiar with your car will probably see this and be able to help you better.

Re: "Shift Up" light in Saabs

Newer Saabs don't have this, and yes when I'm driving nicely and trying to get good gas mileage I will shift between 1500 and 2000. Though lately I haven't been driving nice at all...

You could just remove the bulb.. This would obviously involve removing the gauge cluster, but it's really not too difficult in most cars. Or a REALLY simple (but rather ghetto) fix would be to stick a piece of electrical tape over it.

Re: "Shift Up" light in Saabs

It is not a problem it is just so you could know when the best shift points are to get the best gas mileage.
If you follow it, you should get 30 mpg. I have a 2002 9-5 Aero and it will get 30 mpg when I follow the shift indicators. I also notice that it tends to come on at different rpms according to mt driving aggression.
I don't even notice mine any more unless I want to get that extra mpg.
