Seoul Motor Show 2007 Kicks Off

Seoul Motor Show 2007 Kicks Off
Auto Gala Invites Over 180 Companies
By Jane Han
Staff Reporter - The Korea Times
4/5/07

Music pumping, super white lights beaming, sexy cars strutting their stuff _ lights, camera, vroom _ engine on for the Seoul Motor Show 2007.

The 10-day auto gala, held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) in Ilsan, northwest of Seoul, opens its curtains today showcasing cars from over 32 automakers from more than 10 countries with domestic names also unveiling select new models.

``We are expecting about 250 models to be exhibited, attracting 8,000 foreign buyers,’’ said Hoh Moon, chairman of the organizing committee.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, the country’s only auto event recognized by the International Organization for Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) is looking to draw about one million visitors.

Organizers said motorists can get a grasp of the latest industry trends through the show themed ``Creation of the Imagination _ A New World is Coming!’’ which will see 17 concept cars _ 12 from domestic and five from foreign companies _ with a total of seven eco-friendly models.

Leading Korean automaker Hyundai Motor is uncovering its HND-3 and TQ cars for the first time in the world.

Hyundai’s affiliate Kia Motors will show 20 cars with the all-new SUV concept KND-4 debuting for the first time.

Under the theme ``The Passion for Designology,’’ Kia will showcase its energy matched with the company’s forward-looking design.

A sneak peek of Kia’s off-road full size SUV codenamed HM will also attract visitors who want to check out the latest of the carmaker’s new models.

GM Daewoo will knock on the luxury car market with its new sedan L4X, co-produced with Australia’s Holden.

The maker’s new roadster G2X with a 2.4-liter, 177-horsepower engine and the WTCC Ultra concept made with worldwide GM designers will also be introduced.

Holden's taking over the world. Hehe. Is Hyundai going to show off the Genesis there? They showed it off at the NYIAS but the concept didn't have an interior as far as I know.

Yeah, the Genesis must not have an interior yet, at least one ready for prime time. I've never seen a photo of it.

I love these crazy auto shows in Asia where they have the scantily-clad spokesmodels attracting more attention than the cars. I'm surprised Ming didn't find some archival footage of this for us.

I want to see what Hyundai can do in interiors. That will be the make or break for them for the next decade to come, especially if they want to be taken seriously. Anyhow, I think the interior of the new VeraCruz LOOKS pretty nice.

Agreed about the Veracruz...it's a pretty nice package overall. I hate the Sonata's interior, probably because of the cheesy fake wood around the radio, the light-colored vents (tan or grey), and the scattershot layout of the HVAC controls:

The Azera also seems to have a similar affliction. They're improving their cars, but I don't think they're there yet.

Excellent work getting the spokesmodel photos into your other thread about the Seoul show, Ming!
