Why is the heater not turning on with remote start?

My brother just picked up a '09 2500HD LT SBCC, It came with the factory remote start, when he uses it, nothing in the truck turns on till he puts the key in it and turns it.

He leaves his dials on (manual climate control) but they don't run till the keys turned.

Did someone miss a wire? Or is this how its supposed to function? Kind of defeats the purpose of remote start.

    Thanks.

What does the owner's manual say?

Re: Why is the heater not turning on with remote start?

I think it might have something to do with the outside temperature. I know on my Grand Prix when I first started using the remote start it was about 50 degrees and there was no need for the defroster(s) to be used. The fans never seemed to turn on. However now in the winter season the front defroster is on full blast, the rear defroster on and the only thing missing is the drivers heated seat on (a glaring omission).

In my Aura XR, the fan control must be in the "Auto" position for the heat to come on with the remote start... It will not work if not in that position... The 2500HD may have a similar feature... All other electronic devices must wait for the key to be inserted and turned to the "Accessory" position to activate...

The heater will not operate until the coolant temperature reaches a set point, in other words if the coolant is too cold the heater will not work.

He's correct, the blower will start once the vehicle warms up. No point in blowing cold air.

Holy cow is that the truth. We have an 09 Saturn Vue XR with the heated leather seats. It is annoying as hell that the seat heaters don't turn on with the remote start. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to coordinate the seat heaters with the external temperature reading. i.e. if the car says its 32 degrees outside, it automatically turns the seats on. Anything warmer, it doesn't. Shouldn't be that hard. The only other complaint I would have on that is that the seat heaters themselves suck. They take like 10 minutes before I feel anything. Kinda defeats the purpose since I am already adjusted to it by that point.

Without the heat load of a person sitting in the seat, the seat heater will soon burn the cover. Many seat heaters will not work unless the seatbelt is buckled just for this reason.

Or they have cloth seats. The new Terrain/Equinox twins can have the seats turn on when you remote start the car. Its in the config settings as its turned off from the factory but they work awesome.

I was wondering the same thing. My 2008 Silverado has remote start but doesn't turn the heater/blower on. However, maybe it is due to engine temp. I will try letting it run a few minutes on just the remote w/ the defrost set on and see if it kicks on or not. However, I just assumed the heater didn't come on because the key had not turned past accessory.

Well if your vehicle have manual controls it will only do what you have it sat for. However on some it blows consistantly cold or not (it does in my 08) and some it doesnt. . .dont ask me why but some of my service tech's were playing with that feature on these trucks when they first came out with it.

Manual controls. Set on defrost and floor, full heat, medium fan. Nothing.

LOL, I thought the same thing on my 09 Sierra SLE, manual controls.

This morning after starting with my remote I noticed the blower was blowing. It wasn't on the the highest setting (fan). Before I put the key in and turned it on, I turned up the fan, it did not increase speed.

Tomorrow I will turn the temp and fan setting up all the way, prior to remote starting and see what happens. I'll check the owners manual also.

I know on my wifes 07 Lucerne w/ auto hvac, if you leave it set to auto, the blower starts at specific coolant temp. The heated seats warm as well.
