Wheel Well Tool Box
I have a 2009 GMC 2500HD standard box with a Retrax tonneau cover on the bed. I am looking for a Wheel Well Tool Box that will fit under the tonneau. Does any of the members on this board know of a tool box that will fit under a tonneau? I have a Husky Sliding 5th wheel hitch installed in the box, so there is no extra room for any other type of tool box. It can be either diamond pattern steel, or plastic, I don't care which.
Thanks. |

Re: Wheel Well Tool Box
Don't know where to ask this, but you say you have a RETRAX cover.
Do you like it? What are the pros and cons (freezing up, etc)? Does it need drainage holes in the box? I ask because I am thinking of getting one for a 1500 Sierra standard box (6'- 6"). |

Re: Wheel Well Tool Box
I shopped around, had decided on the Pace Edwards Full Metal Jack Rabbit, but did some research on the web and found out that the PE has a lot of problems. Main problem is the spring loaded drum. If it breaks you are stuck with shipping charges back to the factory for warranty repairs. The selling dealer will ship at cost to you. 2 year warranty, but springs break usually within 18 months. Google Pace Edwards problems, there are quite a lot of horror stories.
I like the Retrax, and they did drill 2 holes in the floor of my pickup box. Price of the Retrax was much cheaper than the PE. PE quoted me $3000 Cdn. installed on my standard box 6'6" Pickup. Retrax installed was $1550 Cdn. 1 piece Lexan top against vinly covered aluminum slats on the PE. Only seam is a front of box where cover disappears under the lip of storage box. The box in my truck allows about 12" under the storage container. That is enough room for me to get my 9.9 hp outboard motor under it when I go fishing. The Retrax locks in any position, the PE every 12". I am very happy with it, and the cover overlaps the tailgate by 1/2" so it is almost water tight. I bought the weather guard seal for the tailgate, and I haven't seen any water in the bed even in the pouring rain. One thing I have noticed is that water does collect on it in the centre just like on a soft top. I just squeege it off or let the wind blow it off when driving. Haven't had any problems with freezing, hasn't gotten cold enough yet. I can't tell where you are from, not on your signature, but if you are in the Toronto Area, I got mine from Hitch City, they have 3 stores in the Toronto area. |
