Suburban or Expedition
Have a buddy that is looking at purchasing one of these soon. He was showing me that he was interested in a Expedition Limited and the Suburban Z-71. While he was showing me both of these suv's I realized how much more expensive the suburban is over the expedition talking close to 10,000. Thats a whole lot of money. That aside we realized that you the expedition does not offer a limited slip or locking diff. so how does that rear end work? Also, the expedition offers a 6spd and chevy still offering that 4spd, any news when they will be offering the 6spd been 2 years now? However, i found this hard to believe but with the 4spd the burb still gets 14 city epa to the expidition 12. Probably be able to pull a 15 city 21 hwy with a 6spd.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
I really find it hard to believe that the difference between the 2 is 10k. Anyway, what is he planning on doing with it? There are pros and cons to both of them, so it would help a little if we knew what he wanted to use it for.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
The Expedition is smaller than the suburban
The Expedition EL/Max is the same size.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
You can find used Excursions cheap.
Heck, if I didn't have certain standards for gas mileage, handling, and practicality I'd be buying one tomorrow.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
As the above have said, a Tahoe - Expedition compare would make more sense. Also He could do an Expedition EL - used Excursion - Suburban comapro

Re: Suburban or Expedition
tahoe/expedition is better comparo. expo has one plus that i can think of, and thats the fold flat third seat. the gm's dont have that since they have a live rear axle. but for hauling and towing, solid axle would be a better bet IMO.
and then if he does the tahoe, theres the hybrid too.

He is comparing the expedition el to the burb and funny enough he is trading in his excursion. Diesel is way too expensive. |

Re: Suburban or Expedition
The Excursion could be had with a Power Stroke turbo diesel which would be my choice in a large SUV. The later 6.0L has more power and the 5 speed auto though some people will say they weren't quite as reliable as the 7.3L

Re: Suburban or Expedition
Is that true? The Expy only gets 12 compared to Suburbans 15 mpg. I thought they were maybe 1 mpg diff.
Anyway, the fold flat third row is perfect for those who don't always need a larger EL version and lowered with a button as well. Try taking a 3rd row out of an SUV without a hernia. The IRS should be much better as well, even when towing. That is a myth by mostly non-IRS fans I think. Besides, the Expy tows more anyway.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
Would the 3/4 ton Suburban tow more than the Expy?

If he wants to pick up something that is "fully loaded" then he should check out the Yukon Denali XL.

Re: Suburban or Expedition
There is a reason the Surburban costs more! The only real reason to get a Ford SUV is to get a diesel Excursion, and a 7.3 at that. And since they havent made the 7.3 since 03 then I wouldnt even concider it! So between the two I would DEFFINATLY go with the Suburban Z-71! Unless it happens to be a with nice low mileage and the 7.3 Powerstroke. I would NEVER buy a Expedition, Excursion mabey, but Suburban deffinatly!

Re: Suburban or Expedition
I had 2 Excursions with the 7.3 00 & 02 then a 05' with the 6.0. The 7.3s were a lot better on fuel than the 6.0. My 7.3s got 16-20mpg then came the 6.0 that was doing good to get 16 on the hyway avg was only 14-15 the same as my 07 Suburban. I like the fold flat seats in the Expy ELs too. The LTZ is the Top of the line Suburban and a Z71 like mine can be loaded out pretty close in price to the LTZs, you just can't get the 6.0L in the Z71. I went with the Z anyway just because I really like the looks of the new body style Z71s. There is no way there is 10k differnce if comparing apples to apples in the way they are equipped. I have seen Epys sticker over 50k, I have also seen suburbans that sticker in the low 40s too. Personally I like the Lincoln version of the Xpy El the best of the fords, but I chose the Chevy, because it had the best residual value, since I typically lease this type of vehicle.
