Medium Duty Dealership Employees

Does anyone work at a GMC or Chevy medium duty store? I am wondering what is happening with production moving to International. Is 2008 going to be a short model year for these trucks? I have also heard that International is interested in offering larger trucks to GMC and Chevy dealers. Any news?

Re: Medium Duty Dealership Employees

We are a Medium duty dealer here in Canada. So far this is what we know. 2008 production is now built out. 2009 production ends in september. Sometime in jan or feb 09 international will start building trucks for us as 2010 models. there will be a gap inbetween production while International moves the equipment to their yet to be named plant. This is assuming they permission to sell out to International.

So is the International brand gone or is it just going to be a twin of the GMC?

I thought International made mostly heavier trucks than the GMC Topkick.

Maybe International Harvester/Navistar will come out with a decent cab over design so GM won't have to use Isuzu.

International is the largest producer of medium trucks (Topkick size) in the U.S., and one of the largest heavy truck (class 8 Peterbilt size) producers as well (don't get this medium/heavy duty classification confused with a heavy duty pickup, those are still light duty trucks). The International brand isn't going anywhere, International will take over building the Topkick and Kodiak for GM. The GM trucks will probably never be twins of the comparable International trucks (4400, now Durastar). GM will still partner with Isuzu for cabovers.

I work for a large fleet, and I can't help but think this will end up being a good thing for both GM medium duty customers and dealers. GM has not been serious about large commercial trucks for 20 years. The trucks themselves have been great, but GM would never add second shifts to the plant or open additional plants. Order leed times were usually ridiculous, they would be 'built out' every year by April, just tough to get any trucks out of them. No question International will build all the dealers can sell. Should make the line much more competitive.
