Engine lineup for new HD's - Anyone know??
I know the new HD's will have the new LMM Duramax which will be significantly higher prices then LBZ and loaded with new pollution controls for low sulfer diesel.
Does anyone know the other engine options for the HD's?? Will the 8.1 Vortec still be around. Will the 5.3 be the base engine?? Any 6.0 or 6.2 option?? I just noticed that the one and only engine for a 1500 Ext Cab/Long bed is the 5.3. (no other option for that configuration). I'm hoping the 2500 Ext Cab/Long bed will have some higher output gas engine options. |

What is a factor is new new price tag of the LMM Duramax. (predictions are that it'll be about a $10k option). The other factor is that diesel's no longer represent a meaningful fuel savings unless you're a high mileage highway driver. The MPG benefits are almost all negated by the price premium of diesel over regular gas. (reg is $2.89 locally but diesel is $3.39). Rumors also suggest that ULSD is reducing MPG by a couple points. Duramax's still have the edge in towing but an 8.1 can keep up in all but the most extreme towing situations. GM better not EOL the 8.1 next year!!!! |

ya if u hear a powerchoke drive by it sounds like a fricken semi truck. when you hear a duramax its not as prominant. but some ppl like that semi truck sound. IMHO i like the way the duramax sounds, and throw some exhaust and intake and chip in there damn. u can have that thing sounding really good.

If they kill the big block I'll be more than pissed. I've been holding off on a new Suburban and waiting for the HD 2500 version. If they max out with the 6.0 (and knock 2,500 pounds off the max tow rating) I'll be going elsewhere.
Then again, elsewhere is a truck or an older GMT-800 Suburban. Argh! Mike

Re: Engine lineup for new HD's - Anyone know??
The Dmax is still much to loud for me, sorry guys. I've driven it, and own an 8.1. I am currently at a campground with 100 rv's. 1/2 the trucks are diesel, the Dmax is the queitest but still too loud for me. My 8.1 is by far the best compromise around, quiet and can tow 12,500 lbs. I don't care about mileage, and I don't think an extra grand a year in fuel compared to a 6.0 or diesel warrants NOT having a 8.1. The diesel costs that much extra to buy and the 6.0 can't tow like the 8.1, I know cuase I own a 6.0 too. Like Mike, if the 8.1s don't come in the 07's i will also by a used one in 07, but the 8.1 will be tough to find, cuase those who have them want them. I love my 8.1, and it doesn't have the allison either, don't want it either. Since the 8.1 is still offered on the kodiacs and topkicks for 07, I'm guessing it will still be around for awhile. All it really needs is Dod to help it a little for non-towing duties. My guess is, with 450 ft-lbs of torque, Dod will be helpfull in bringing up mpg 1-2 pionts. Not a big deal to me, but to the masses maybe. There's only about 1-2 mpg difference between my 6.0 and 8.1 anyway! Why have a 6.0 then???? Most dealers I bought trucks from in the past 4-5 years didn't even know the engine existed, and none of them stocked them, ever. I've found a few 8.1 owners in my rv'ing experience and every one of them grinned when I asked if they had an 8.1. One even compared his cummins to his dads 8.1, said he drove them back to back towing 11K lb trailers to Florida from NJ, and said he was impressed that it held it's own against the cummins, AND would buy the 8.1 next truck over his cummins. Hopefully, he, Mike and I can in 07. There are a lot of part-time towers out here that NEED the big engine in our burbs, and I WANT one in my next pick-up too. And sorry in advance to the diesel owners, I know you love them for your reasons, they just aren't mine.

What are the specs on the new Duramax? Did they go down significantly?

As for a Cummins owner wanting a gasser next. I'd have to see it to believe it. I have talked to hundreds of Diesel owners, and have never heard one say they would ever go back to gas. Diesels are like Crew Cabs, once you've had one, you never want to go back. I know as long as I can afford a Diesel, I will always own one.

Re: Engine lineup for new HD's - Anyone know??
If I can get the dmax in the burb then that would be ok, although my first choice would be the 8.1, the 6.0 is not enough. The 6.2 appears to be better with VVT but it's down 50 ft-lbs vs the 8.1. For the first time ever, I've looked on ford's site at the SD's. Although I haven't driven it yet, I would seriously consider the V10 in my next pick-up over the HD's diesel. Driving them will tell me, noise and ride are my priorities, as I would drive the pick-up as a daily driver, with part time towing duties. As for the big SUV's currently no one offers a big engine or diesel. I was told the Excursion is done? It's not on their site. Time will tell if gm will put the 8.1 in the HD line. we should know soon enough.

Re: Engine lineup for new HD's - Anyone know??
Ahh, the numbers for the LMM have not been announced in the HD's and will not be announced until later in the year. GM has already released all the changes about the LMM DuraMax except for the power ratings in the HD's. http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayS...=3&docid=28148
"Final advertised ratings for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD pickups and GM's full-size vans will be released later this year" They'll go up, no way they would bring out an entirely new truck with no power changes. Even with all the "New" emission cr@p. The power ratings went up in the Kodiak and Topkick. Chris
