I don't think anyone knows at this point. I would bet though that it's still probably a couple years away. If the mpg number end up being better than the competition for the new trucks, then GM has nothing to worry about until Ford or Dodge comes back with something better. My guess is that by the time the new F150 comes out, GM will be able to start using the 8 speeds and maintain the highest mpg rating.
Your guess is as good as anyones outside of GM. If this is the same transmission that is being co-developed with Ford, they'll probably hit the market at around the same time. If I remember right GM is doing the rear wheel applications, where Ford front.
2015
Too far out to worry about it. I'm satisfied with the 6 speed. The mpg gains from 4 to 6 speeds are more significant than from 6 to 8 speeds. And then GM will probably slow-roll the launch such that only certain vehicles can get it for several years - and with a premium at that. I'm not holding my breath.
REMEMBER GM - GOOD ENOUGH, ISN'T!!!
"We expect taxpayers will get back all the money my administration has invested in GM," Obama said.
