According to a press release from GM today, Cadillac is going to offer a new base CTS with a 2.8L VVT V-6. This is very good news for me, because it should bring the price down a bit, maybe enough for me to pick one up in the next couple years. No word on hp, though.

Also, the 3.6L gets a 6-speed manual.

Good for Caddy. That's ups the techno factor in the CTS. It's a selling poitn for those import-oriented buyers.

If I remember correctly it will put out 200HP and around 200ft lb t. They will allso use it in a future SAAB probibly in Turbo form.

Even without the turbo, that sounds like a sweet engine. Cobalt Z24 anyone?

200 hp, 200 ft-lbs sounds good to me. I bet it will handle even better with the lighter engine, too.

Anyone have any idea how much below the current base CTS it will cost? I'm really hoping it gets down into the $27k range, where the base 3-series and C-Class play.

With a smaller engine Cadillac can lower the price to around $27,000-$29,000 to compete with the base 3-Series, the 325.

Although this is great news for those of us that want to jump into the entry-level Cadillac style, in reality it kinda sucks compared to the Infiniti G35 which has a 260HP engine standard for about $26-27,000. I just hope it is only the engine that is decontented and not any of the currently standard features. Either way, this is a very positive move for Cadillac, and it will boost sales even further. Especially when people see ads in the paper for a mid-twenties Caddy(if that is the case).

The CTS is a very nice car, and with the 3.6 makes plenty of power for what the car needs. The 2.8 HFV6 will bring in a bit more sales, and make it a smart choice for Euro export.

I hope that the 2.8 does NOT make it into the Cobalt. Z24 should never be used again. People laugh at that. A turbo 2.2 ecotec would be better and make waaaaay more power for much cheaper, and appeal more to the sport compact kids.

I Doubt Cadillac will lower the prices on the CTS, so get your 3.2 or 3.6 while you can. I would like to see the 3.2 Rated at 250HP, the next step up, the 3.6 at around 290HP and then the CTS Sport being produced with a Twin Turbo 3.6 @ 320HP. That would be a truly competititve package, especially for $30K.

I didn't seriously think there would ever be a Z24 again, but back in the 80's, there was something really nice about the Z24's torquey, smooth V6 compared with the peaky twin cams and lurching turbos of the rest of the pocket rockets of the day. I think I would still appreciate the linear power delivery of a 2.8 V6 in a car this size compared to a turbo 4, even if it's peak is less.

Of course, being a DOHC V6, it would push the cost of a Cobalt pretty high, if it would even fit under the hood.

210HP even better and more then I remember! But I wouldent expect it to be mutch cheaper then todays 3.2L model is. If they move in eny direction in price it will be upwords with the 3.6L version! And it shouldent be eny lighter eather being that they the 2.8L-3.6L are the same basic engine of the same size (except BORE/STROKE).

I'm very excited to see a 6-speed and a 3.6L in the CTS. I hope they package it as a sport model - tight suspension, and few aesthetic kicks along with the hot 3.6/stick combo. That'd be very, very sweet.

that sounds like a great plan for this car. With the base engine, 3.6, and 350 V8, this will become a very competetive car.
