Question GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

Myself and MG were having a discussion on AIM about some specific GM interiors. He was putting down the current STS interior (as we all know he LOVES to do :p ). Anyway, so I started looking up pictures of the old STS. I was really surprised.

2003 STS

2005 STS

Notice how much nicer the carpet is in the 2003 STS? Remember, we're comparing only interiors.

What do you think?

The old one is so much better. My parents have an STS, it is a 96 and it is very nice for ten years. The wood is incredible and the leather. Fit and finish at the time was very good.

Re: GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

I think Cadillac took a few steps back with the current STS in some areas... and took a few steps forward.

THe wood on teh center concole doesn't extend to the armrest anymore.
There is reduced wood on the doors, though there's more leather.... but the leather looks all crumpled on the door. There needs to be nice ordered pleats or something to make it more attractive.
The current steering wheel looks nicer (though it's very generic).
Everyting is more flush on the new STS and it's cleaner. But it just looks "cheaper." The old STS looks rich and luscious, though busy.
I prefer the gated shifter on the old STS. it has more style than teh hunk of chrome on the new one.

Re: GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

Old STS wheel is ugly and so is the dashboard. But I prefer electroluminescent guages on the old one, they cheaped out there on the new one. The new STS' gaps are much tighter. I'll take the new one provided it had navigation. IIRC, the new dash isn't pretty without the navigation system.

"Ice possible"? WTF?

I believe this is a feature in Cadillacs. When the temps hover at or around 32F (0C), the warning will pop up on the InfoScreen/NavScreen. I'm not sure if it carries over onto current Cadillacs though.

You just need to hit Clear.

Based on these pics, I like the new STS's interior more. I haven't had a chance to look at either up close in real life though.

I know my dad's Avalanche does that when the temp is about 32. On the info display in the gauges it flashes Ice and where it displays the temp in the rear view mirror it also displays ice.

2003 STS looks like it has higher quality materials, but the design is not that good.

The new STS looks much better in black. The beige is HIDEOUS.

Re: GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

Overall, I think the 2003 STS looks like a much more comfortable car. I mean, just take a look at those seats!

Plus, I've always had a thing for the Zebrano wood trim.

Re: GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

The 05 could be a lot nicer, but it looks like a lot of corners were cut. If I was dropping that much coin for a car, I'd want something a little nicer. Heck, a $30,000 Accord is in many ways nicer than the STS.

Re: GM: Not ALL interiors moving forward?

I think any GM car with the DIC has the "Ice Possible" deal. My Maxx has it. Its below 38* from what I have noticed. Its cool, untill there is like 3 ft of snow, and abotu 12* out and the computer comeson "Ice Possible" its like, "no duh", but the computer doesnt know.

Anyway, No i really dont like the old STS interior. My biggest gripe about all OLD GM interiors is the bubbly-ness of everything. Everything was rounded and looked like it was pumped up before everything was settled. Steering wheel looks so ugly.
I love the STS's interior. It could use some more visual appeal, but the quality is clearly up there. It just needs a better designer, thats all. It needs to stop looking so utilitarian and straight edged. Needs a little bit more going on, but everyone I have sat in or driven has felt on par with others in its class.
Just looking at all that old switch gear....gives me the chills. I can feel the cheep plastic under my finger, clicking and clanking as you push them, watching parts of the dash pannel move and shift.
