    2007 LaCrosse 3.8 using oil

My 2007 Buick LaCroose w/ the 3.8 v6 is using some oil. 37,xxx miles . I am using Castrol GTX 5-30 w/ Wix filters.

I recently made a few 500-600 mile hiway trips . I change oil @ 3000-3500 miles and need to add 1 to 1 1/2 qts. in between the changes. No leaks or smoke on start up. Dealer said not a common issue w/ them.

    Any body have this issue??

How long have you been using the Castrol? Are you the original owner? When did you first notice the oil consumption?

I'd change the PCV valve, and retest the oil consumption. Kind of a long shot, but possible. It's also possible that Castrol has changed it's formulation-might try another brand oil for 1 change and see what happens.

I will do that. I had a 2001 Olds interquie w/ the 3.5 Shortstar motor that used oil. I was told that wa an issue w/ them, but really surprised w/ the 3.8 doing the same thing.

I have used Castrol for along time w/o issues, but this has me guessing now?
5/30 weight is what I am using & w/ winter nearly here I don't think going to a heavier weight would be good thing, as it does sit outside

    thanks MrCritical

I had a '95 Buick Riviera and an '02 Pontiac Bonneville both with the 3800 Series II. Both cars used oil between changes with no smoking or leaking or problems of any kind. I think it's just characteristic of that engine - which is smooth, powerful and bulletproof.

I don't think it's normal if it hasn't been doing it from the get-go.

I wouldn't change weight oils. I'd try something like Pennzoil for one change. As I said, the oil companies do change formulations from time to time.

That PCV is easy and cheap to change.

My 2005 Allure/LaCrosse 3.8L has the same issue with approximately same mileage after 3 years. I complained to GM service/dealer just before the warranty expired and they got GM Tech Support feedback that up to 1.8L loss between the changes is within specs for 3800 III series. Now I am at almost 60K, the same pattern ~1-1.5L between 5000 mi intervals (or I go up to 25% oil life monitor reading), I add ~0.5L of Mobile 1 every 1800 mi before oil change. Runs like new! No oil marks on the driveway.

The only problem I had with the engine was failed oil pressure sensor (that was a bit scary) but spark plugs were dry and I passed emission tests last January with flying colors.

Hi,were you able to figure this out? I'm having the same issue. mine is 39 miles and I also use castrol gtx w/ wix filters. When i went to my dealer to have it diagnose, they say it's normal. I tried to read on Buick repair and one issue there was the reformulation of castrol.

I took in to the dealer & let them do the oil change. It has been alittle over 1000 miles since then . I need to watch the level & when it gets to 1 qt. low I need to bring it in to them.
They didn't use Castrol, but I can't remeber what they did use

    Doesn't it have a 5yr/100K powertrain warranty?
If so it should cover oil consumption.

oil change was 31 dollars. He said it was part of the tracking that needed to be done.

He said that some amount would be normal, but not sure what that amount was.
