Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
It will last over 400,000 miles if he takes proper care of it.

Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
My '98 3800 has an oil leak, but I'm not sure if it's from the valve cover gasket or intake manifold gasket. I've heard that intake manifold gaskets come as close to being a trouble area for the 3800 as anything. I've never bothered to fix it because I can still go 5000 miles (I run Mobil1) and it will only be down 1/2 a quart.
Seriously, you'd have a hard time finding an engine with a more golden reputation for reliability than the 3800. Mine has 121,000 miles and still starts instantly with about 1/2 second of cranking. It needed spark plugs and wires at about 92,000 miles to take care of a slight miss, but that's all that's ever been done to it. |

Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
Forever. My family has had 5 cars with the 3.8. Its easy to work on and gets great fuel economy. My Grand Prix has 178,000 miles on it and it is perfect. I never had to fix anything on it. Beat that Honda.

Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
Problems that are common for those 3800s: Crank sensors, water pumps, plastic coolant fittings, and plastic 90 degree coolant elbows. Those are the main things that are more common, otherwise those older 3.8s can go forever.

I think the best place to look would be on ebay... I know I've seen several air intake kits on there for the 3800 and the full size FWD GM's...

Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
My grandparents have a mid 80's Buick Lesabre with the 3800 V6 and it still runs. Other than trips to the doctor and to the store its garage kept for most of the year and its still in great condition. The 3800 is just about as close to indestructible as your going to get in terms of engines and if your brother takes good care of it it will last him for a very long time

Re: 1995 Buick Lesabre
My '63 Buick Special has the 198in Fireball v6 which is what eventually turned into the 3800 ( after being bored out obviously and fuel injected). The thing runs like a top, gets great gas mpg, and i use it for my daily driver all summer long. The engine was initially designed in 1962 as a 198cubic inch V6 (the worlds first 90 degree v6 and the first practical application of the v6 in general). In the mid 1960's the engine was bored out to 215 cubic inches and was sold to AMC (Jeep) in the late 1960's where they put it into the CJ's (Wranglers). In the mid 1970's when oil skyrocketed. GM purchased the tooling back from AMC and began producing the old Fireball again. In the very late 1970's, the engine was turned into the 3.8 liter rwd V6 and in the late 1980's, the engine was fitted with fuel injection and updated for front wheel drive becoming the 3800.In the winter i drive my '98 Bonneville with the 3800 and it has been fantastic. The modern push rod 3800 evolved out of the old push rod Fireball over the years to become one of the best and most numerous engines ever produced. Never have has a single problem with either vehicle.
