1950's style multi-color paint jobs

One aspect of GM car design from the 1950's I would like to see re-visited and updated is using different colors of paint on differing areas of the car. Sometimes I notice that a thin strip of chrome separates the two color fields; perhaps nowadays it could be a ridge in the body shell, and use the color variations to accent the sculptural effect of the contours. I can imagine 'Art and Science' using this tastefully and subtlety to add a visual richness to their designs.

I think it might just look tacky with Art & Science but the ~1954 Roadmaster had a pretty cool two-tone.

Check out the Lund Cadillac Performance Engineering web-site:

http://www.lundcadillac.com/Accessories33_13.cfm

Mr. Lund was at one time an executive for General Motors, who opened a Cadillac dealership upon retiring--now, it was reported that a relative of his runs this fine dealership. There are also pictures of a two-toned first generation CTS and SRX models.

Around 1979, I always admired a car that was regularly serviced at the local Cadillac dealership my parents dealt with--and it was this: 1979 Eldorado (with factory two-toned paint) in Pottery Gold Firemist (sides) with Sable Black (center, Black Cabriolet vinyl roof, Astroroof and Black Leather Interior) and had the original Eldorado Wire Wheel Covers that coned out, moreso than the 1981 and up versions, featuring brushed silver centers with wreath and crest emblems--it was really a sharp looking car. If executed properly, the two-toned paint schemes could really compliment the Art & Science theme, especially due to the faceted and angular appearance of the designs.

NO! Bad idea! That's like painting an STS pink! Looks cool on old cars, I even thought about it myself, but it doesn't translate to modern design very well.

I don't like that XLR at all. It looks tacky and overdone, IMO.

I prefer monochromatic paint jobs on modern cars, though there have been several older ones that look great with two-tones.

Back in the day I remember being very attracted to that colour combination.

I want a pea-green 70's Suburban with wood paneling!

How about the Bonneville Salt Flats HHR?

My parents used to have a gold '73 Suburban with fake woodgrain. Ick!

Speaking of which, my dad was just telling me last night he couldn't believe that no hot rodders have taken an HHR panel and turned it into a RWD, V8 powered pro street machine. The one you showed above isn't that, but it would be right up his alley.

There are plenty of Chrysler 300s painted like that running around here. Many of them look good.

I'm not sure if I'd like any of today's models with tu-tone paint. Those late '70's E bodies looked really good though.

Short memories, I see.

The last of the Park Avenues and LeSabres could be had with factory two tone paint.
