Why no AWD CARS from GM?

I think I know the answer, and the answer is protecting SUV sales.

Nearly every major manufacturer offers at least one AWD car now, but GM doesn't. Granted, they have the Vibe(rator) and the Saabaru, but neither are truly GM cars.

In certain areas of the country I'm sure it is no big deal, but in some areas it really affects GM's sales. Rocky Mountains, upper New England, etc.

They had the 6000STE for about five minutes. Other than that ?????

Subaru has a big niche these days. I know GM has a minor financial interest in Subaru, but that can't possibly be preventing them from competing, can it?

Pontiac has the Montana, Caddy has the SRX, Buick has the Randezvous... I don't think your statement is accurate.

    And the STS.

But Ford, Chrysler, Subaru and VW offer it on attainable sedans & wagons. The Five Hundred, 300, Magnum, Montego, Passat, Legacy & Impreza offer it under $30K.

GM may be waiting to see how popular of an option it becomes on the domestic rivals. Also, the Epsilon 2 platform in the works apparantly is AWD capable.

This might be the one and only time where GM's tardiness may actually be beneficial. Let other companies spend money on creating awareness for the benefits for the feature, then when the levels of awareness and demand are up, boom, through your products out there.

Gm does not through their products out right away.It takes GM about 2 or 3 years, so really there are not that many benefits for waiting. If GM came out with a feature or product first than the consumer would recognize GM for that.

There will be more AWD cars in the near future. The Zeta chassis will be offered in AWD and RWD, v6 and v8.

So lets see. Toyota lied about recalls. Lied about their HP ratings... I wonder how much truth is in their milage ratings..

AWD is a crutch. It gives you better traction off the line, but to get it you suffer from having a heavier car, worse powertrain losses, higher maintenance, higher upfront costs and lower fuel economy. Definately hype in my opinion, but oh well.

His statement is very accurate. The models you mention above are MINIVAN based (although, I don't know what the SRX is based on, but at big $$, don't really care). The question is CARS.

As for the question, who really needs all wheel drive? We get lots of snow here in Canada, and my winter-tire shod minivan never gets stuck.

I think AWD may have a purpose in high performance cars, but AWD is just a big marketing gimmick. I view AWD as just another drive line that can break. When you're looking for an inexpensive vehicle (or for that matter, a family sedan under $25k), FWD will satisfy 99% of the people.

The SRX is on Sigma, just like the CTS and STS.

Re: Why no AWD CARS from GM?

AWD was a fad in the 1980's (started by Audi Quattro) and GM was there in 1989ish with the 6000 STE AWD.

Asides of that, there is little reason to have AWD in a normal car...
