Re: When did your family go GM?
My Grandfather (who is no longer with us) started with Chevy and Oldsmobile in the early 30's. My dad has been diving Chevy's and Olds's since the early 50's. His first "new from the dealer" GM car was a 1965 Impala. As I have posted before my whole family WAS GM blue.
When Oldsmobile died in 2004 ALL of them left for imports, except me, I'm the lone hold out... They all drive Toyota or Lexus now...

Re: When did your family go GM?
My grandfather has always bought GM. I'll have to ask him how far back that goes and what his first car was and I'll post that when I find out. I do believe, though, that he probably owned Chevy pickups going back to around 1946 or so as that's what he always used for his appliance store.
I was brought home from the hosipital in my dad's '69 Camaro Z28 doin about 90mph. My first car was a beat up 1977 Chevy Nova. My dad has only ever bought Chevy's, now w/ a Saturn as well. My mom has primarily driven Chevy's as well, but since their divorce, she's switched to Pontiacs (and briefly a Ford Explorer which I actually liked alot). Me? I've only ever owned Chevy's, Saturns, an AMC CJ7 and one Jeep Wrangler w/ the lone holdout for foreign makes being the VW Rabbit she picked out.

Re: When did your family go GM?
My grandad owned a FX Holden back in the 50s, and my great grandad owned a HK GTS Monaro (253).
My dad owned several HR Holdens too. These days though we're pretty mixed. I've only ever owned two cars and both have been from Holden, and Ford, but I consider myself to be more of a Holden/GM fan. Last edited by GMH-VL : 05-06-2009 at 02:08 AM. |

Re: When did your family go GM?
If I recall correctly, it started with my grandfather who's second car was a near-new '49 Oldsmobile 88 after his '34 Ford coupe. His first new car was a '55 Oldmobile 88. Prior to that the family had driven primarily Ford products, but when my grandfather beat their Mercurys and Lincolns up with his Olds they followed suit. Since then it's been almost all GM for my father's side. My dad's first car was a '66 Malibu Sport Coupe with a 327/4-speed, posi., buckets, knee-knocker tach and AM radio. His first new car was a triple-black '74 Monte Carlo Landau.
My mother's side was primarily Ford until '94 when my grandparents ordered a '95 Blazer to replace their '86 F-150, but my mom's first car was a lightly used '74 Nova Spirit Of America hatch after driving my grandparents' '65 Galaxie 500 coupe. My first car was an '85 Jeep Cherokee that I thought of as partly GM thanks to it's 2.8L V6 and lots of shared parts. My second car though was a new '99 Sierra, since then it's been only GM for me. Who knows if I'll continue the tradition though.

Re: When did your family go GM?
Forever ago.
My dad used to own Fords, never had much luck with them. After a long string of lemons, he bought a Silverado and stayed with GM ever since...

Re: When did your family go GM?
Hasn't...YET
I just bought our first American car this year, my '89 Le Baron and now my dad is looking for a '96-00 Chrysler minivan, so we may become a Chrysler family , we used to be a Ford family from the early 1990's to mid 2000's, until my parents traded our Ford to Japanese and British cars. The last Ford we owned was the Mondeo it was a terrible car and i hated it so did my dad , but the Granada and Scorpio were great cars.

Re: When did your family go GM?
My father was a true Opel fan. Before I and my sister saw the light of the world, he bought every year a new car from Opel. The first car I can remember was a nice Opel Manta A and my first car was a 13 years old Manta B GT/E Berlinetta.

Re: When did your family go GM?
Boy this is hard. So many cars......
My mum is 73 and dad had a Cadillac when he started dating her when she was 17, so that's a while back. He had so many cars, things like a '53 Hemi Chrysler new Yorker, a host of British cars, Vauxhalls included (still have '50's Vauxhall Ute made by Holden that he owned, and a HT wagon Kingswood he bought new) and German and Italian, but no French cars. He had many Holdens of course working for them in the industry. I recall a pink and white FB, a blue FJ Ute, a White HK Premier, a green FC wagon...like I said he had lots of cars, there would be more than this I just have to remember them all. My uncle Mack had a black Buick and driver in the 50's and 60's. My uncle Graham while driving Benz's exclusively for work always had Monaro's for play throughout the 70's. I had some wild rides in those as a teen. His last was the Maroon LE Monaro with the gold honeycomb wheels. He pulled into the yard with it brand new, I just got my license. My 12 year old cousin was with me too, and as Uncle Graham went inside he tossed me the keys and said don't go too far. That was the first time I drove on the road at over 120 mph..... Scared the bejesus out of my little cousin who came with. Oh the good old days before P Plate V8 restrictions.....Don't you just love uncles with lots of toys and who don't give a shi..., I mean hoot, about sharing them. ![]() ![]() Last edited by MonaroSS : 05-11-2009 at 10:00 PM. |

Re: When did your family go GM?
My Dad had a '53 Ford Customline then an AP2 Chrysler (Australian model) then a VC Valiant but my brothers were both in to Holden.
John had a succession of Humpys (FJs which he worked over) then he got an AP5 Valiant. Russell had an EK then an immaculate FB then bought a GTR Torana new followed by an HX Premier and then an HX ute. He now has a Subaru Forrester |

Re: When did your family go GM?
My family has always had a penchant for GMs performance cars. Family members have had everything from Bel Airs, Impalas, Chevelles, GTOs, Trans Ams, Camaros, Corvettes etc...Dad went through T/As and Vettes in the 1970s like crazy and mom has always loved Camaros (our family car was an IROC driven by a mom who could have doubled for Stevie Nicks). I'm glad to say the GM way of life is continuing on what with Corvette purchase last year and dads recent pick up on a 2008 Crystal Red Vette. My sister loves Honda for some reason...I always said they brought the wrong kid home from the hospital.

Re: When did your family go GM?
My Dad owned one of these back in the day when he was my age (though, with a small-block 327)......
![]() and since then, he's owned these..... (1980 Chevette) ![]() (1986 Buick Century Limited) ![]() (1991 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight Royale) ![]() Unfortunately, he got saddled with some bad engines in those last two....(the 'Iron Duke' 4-banger in the Century liked to blow head gaskets and the 3800 V6 (L27) in the Eighty-Eight) slowly devolved into an oil-burner ) He now owns a 2002 Accord LX......though I'm hoping taking my Malibu on an upcoming road trip will convince him to at least test drive a GM once he decides to ditch the Honda. ![]() ![]() My granddad (mom's dad) on the other hand never drove any imports. Aside from his daliances with Ford & Lincoln, he's owned several GM's--starting with this 1967 or 68 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme ![]() His others included a 1967 Buick Lesabre, 1980 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, 1997 Buick Park Avenue and a 2002 Buick Lesabre Limited (last car he ever owned/drove). I started out with Fords (a 1993 Taurus GL--originally bought from Gramps to replace the aforementioned Eighty Eight.....and a 1990 Lincoln Mark VII), but joined the GM family last September with my purchase of this bad boy ![]() ![]()

Re: When did your family go GM?
After getting screwed by Ford, Olds, Audi, and Chevy dealers my parents bought an '85 Grand Am from Burdette Brothers Pontiac. Because of that dealer we became a Pontiac/GM customer.
Burdette Brothers became a used car dealer at the begining of this year. Though we have a Buick now (Pontiac got the shaft) - Im not sure what cars I will buy in the future after the restructuring. I want the best *value* - everyone else has gotten they bailout, mine will come in purchasing the best car in the class. I hope GM and Chrysler hear that. I will also add that my parents became Gm buyers because of the dealer - axing all of these will make is easier for folks to switch brands. Something close and without sharks in the sales floor.
