My take....and dilema....On the Saturn Astra

Yesterday, I was able for the first time to get a closer look and a test draive on the 2008 Saturn Astra

My Take
First off, I absolutely look this car. For what it has and offers, I can't think of any car to match it. It'll definitely be my next, and frist GM, car. The interior is nice and has outstanding materials; for those nay-sayers. There are cupholders, with on located between the driver and passanger seats and two "hide-away" ones that pop-out from the rear center seat.
Driving it, it handled and drove nicely. The engine reved alittle loud, but so does my Scion xB. The manual shifted nicely and smoothly. The sunroof is the selling point. Huge and come all the way to over my head when sitting in the back seat.

My Dilema
Again, this will be my next car. I currently owe $6,134 left on my 2004 Scio xB. The dealership estimated that my car is worth what I owe. A little disappointed hoping I might get atleast 8-10 k for it. Should I wait to pay my car of quickly and sell it privatly? Or should I go ahaed and do a trade-in and put $2,000 down?

I'm late to work as it is, so I'll be on around 5 or 7 pm tonight to give more details and answer questions.

I agree with vsd. Try to sell it privately, 2000 is alot of money. Thanks for the review of the Astra. I am assuming you are looking at the three door XR?

You can usually get more money privetly. The only thing I would worry about is the time inbetween when you sell your car and you buy the Astra. Will you have a car that you can use, or someone to drive you around?

What colors options are you looking at in your Astra? Obviously you want a sunroof, but anythin else?

Their offer seems very low, considering what I see used ones going for.

Sell it privately. You won't get what you want at any dealer & the more you put down, the happier you will be.

Or at least take it to CarMax to see what they'll give you. They gave me $2-$3,000 more for my G6 than any dealer quoted me.

First, see what Saturn will give you. Try the trade. Last time I was at a Saturn dealer they are being very generous. Since they can't deal on the MSRP they'll work with you on your trade-in. If you don't like it, walk away.

sell it privately even if it takes a little longer. the dealership offered me $15,000 on my CTS and i ended up selling it for 19k about 1 month later.

If your wealthy trade it in. If you can put forth the effort to sell it your self and make more money do it. Ebay.com autotrader.com craigslist.com are all great places to sell a car.

Your scion gets decent gas mileage. The demand for used 4 bangers is very high. Especially automatics

You said that right. My Alero is still not sold even though it is a 4-cylinder but it has a manual transmission.

Re: My take....and dilema....On the Saturn Astra

How much longer until your Scion loan is paid off?

How much more would payments be if you didn't put $2,000 down?

Will $2,000 be a big hit if you had to put it down?

I had a similar dilemma when we traded our Pathfinder in on our new minivan. Nobody wants a BOF SUV so I got $23k for it after much hand wringing. I was hoping for $25k. My wife's instructions were to come back with a monthly payment not exceeding our old one; the way to do that for us was to drop about $2000 extra as a down payment. I wasn't willing to take a loan longer than 60 months (even that is longer than I'd like).
