The HO Q4 was reduced to 175hp in 1994 due to a head redesign.

Remember, the non-HO Q4 put out 160hp. So they added balance shafts and lowered the torque curve to make it more usable with auto trannies before renaming it the twincam and using it in mainstream vehicles.

Re: MotorWeek- 1990 Chevy Beretta GTZ Review

Quad4 came out for the 1987 model year and made 150 hp!

They were great little buggers, but the critics ALWAYS made a note of panning their NVH qualities. But for a performance motor, it should make noise!

The big issue was they had head gasket issues...

If you take a Quad4 out of the car it looks like an Offenhauser racing engine!

A Cobalt SS (2 800 - 2 900 lb) is approx 100 lb heavier than a Beretta (~2 700 - 2 800 lb):P

They did have a great engine note, esp. for a 4-cylinder engine. They had a nice authoritative growl to them. I had a Quad4 Skylark which was a total blast to drive. Still miss that car to this day.

The power output of the Quad4 was spectacular for the day. Too bad the head gasket issue marred their reputation (never personally had that problem, but know of a few people that did).

The Ecotec is boosted for a mix of torque and hp. Actual hp is around 225 in the SS/SC.
Dont forget about the additional 40 lb/ft of torque too.
That would help too.

Re: MotorWeek- 1990 Chevy Beretta GTZ Review

Thanks for the video clip
I have a 2 berettas, 1 1992 GT & 1996 Z26. None have the QUAD4. I still love the car & for the price I paid, best deal I ever got on my 2 cars.
I had a olds calis with the QUAD4 when I was a kid (15 yrs ago). Yes it was fast & it lasted 2 months cause I crashed it.

1996 Beretta 93,000 Mile Great Condition

Here is my 96 Z26 looks just like that one & the air lumbar still works on mine.

Still think that the Beretta was a great looking car for its time.

MEDIOCRITY: It takes a lot less time, and most people won't notice the difference until it's too late.

I absolutely love the Quad 4 engines. My dad's old Grand Am had the regular Quad. What a little sleeper that car was, it was '90 LE Coupe that looked like a P.O.S but would completely murder little ricer Civics and not turbo 4 cylinder DSM cars.

Off topic, but I grew up in fall river. I was just there a week ago. Some of the roads still need repair & the new bridge on Rt 79 taking forever.
It has changed a lot since I been there. I like the way it was in the late 70's & early 80's, Fall River was VERY PORTUGUESE back in the day. It still is but not the same. I think I getting old.

I just came back from Freetown this morning and had to go by the bridge. It was supposed to be done in like 2005 first, then they placed on of the beams or something in the wrong place, so it got pushed back to 2007, now it's expected to be 2012. It's a little rediculous. But yeah, Fall River definitely has changed in the last 20-25 years, and I wouldn't say it's for the better.
