That's still a good handling car even by today's standards. It's just too bad that you can't find one of these around anymore and if you do it's usually beat to death. The Achieva SCX would be even more fun.
John Davis' voice has changed... I wonder if he stopped smoking or something like that over the years...

I always liked the Quad4 Berettas... except for that crappy dashboard... oh man someone should toss mgescuro a picture of a Beretta dashboard and see what he says

Nobody has those sphygmanometer lumbar pumpers anymore... they were big in the mid/late 1980's on sporty cars like Berettas, Daytonas...

*nods*

No kidding. Some things have changed, obviously, but others ... remain very much the same. I used to watch MW _religiously_ a number of years ago, then kinda got away from it when I lost track of when it was on (it switched PBS stations and times for a while). Happened to catch part of it tonight ... and it seemed very much the same. Though, when I watched it regularly, it was Lisa Barrow (sp?) with MotorNews and Greg Singhaus (sp?) with the road report section (my favorite part, sometimes).

That interior is so sweet!

It's amazing how far autos have come in so little time.

Hmm, 180hp and a manual....

How about a 2009 Malibu or Aura with a ~190hp Ecotec, 5speed and sportier suspension?

Re: MotorWeek- 1990 Chevy Beretta GTZ Review

I guess it was because of different HP rating methods, but I often wondered if they had a 190 hp Quad 4 like 20 years ago, how come the Ecotec needs an M62 sitting on top of it to make like 205 hp?

Re: MotorWeek- 1990 Chevy Beretta GTZ Review

lol. my dad had the 91 or 92 GT with the 3.1L V6, that was a fun car.

actually, he had the 88 GTU before that, never got to drive that one though.

Wonder why GM has given up on that segment.

The Quad 4 IMO had the best engine note---I miss them.

The rating cant be too far off if it has a 7 second 0-60

Beretta

2800 lbs
29 MPG
190 HP

Malibu

3500 lbs
30 MPG
170 HP

They don't seem to be making very much progress. Maybe they should have stuck with the quad 4 architecture and built off of that.

The Squareish dash design WAS the design of choice during that era

GM added balacing shafts to smooth the engine out which in turn took power away.

You don't need no balance shaft(s)...

Compare drag times of the GTZ and the Cobalt SS/SC. Both cars are similar weight yet the SS/SC is well over a second faster in the 1/4. 25hp doesn't get you that.

The Ecotec is boosted for a mix of torque and hp. Actual hp is around 225 in the SS/SC.
