    Longest-lasting car battery?

The last Sunday of August (August 30, 2009), I had to buy a new battery for my 1981 Monte Carlo SC. I've owned this car since December 1999 (when I bought it from my parents) and have not previously replaced the battery during my time as owner. The old battery was a GM/AC Delco battery.

So ... I asked Dad to look through his records to find out when that battery was installed. He looked and found that it was bought and installed February 4, 1997. The '81 MC SC had 167,000 miles at that time. When I replaced that battery, the car had 192,000 miles.

Thus ... that GM/AC Delco battery lasted over 12.5 years ... and 25,000 miles.

What is the longest a battery has lasted in your car(s)?

    Re: Longest-lasting car battery?

Just last Novemeber we had to finally replace the battery on my '98 Avalon. It was the original battery from when the car was built and over the years it would die, then get jumped, then soldier on for more. It was finally becoming so bad it kept triggering my check engine light and had to be replaced.

The original battery in my '01 Grand Prix was just replaced last winter. I had an odd failure with it compared to normal. The lead side post connection pulled loose from the rest of the battery. That was close to 8 years and 100k miles.

Unfortunately I can't recall having that long lasting of a battery, the ACDelco in my old
Grand Am lasted quite a while though. My batteries always die before the warranty expiration. On the plus side, I haven't paid for a battery in years.

The longest that I've had one that had to be replaced was 7 years.

I don't like to wait until they die though. Winters are hard on older batteries, and I don't want to be sitting on the side of some highway because I wanted to stress-test my battery. I usually just buy a new one at 5 years.

The guy who sits next to me at work just replaced the10-year old battery in his Intrepid and then it turned out that his problem was the alternator.

Used to drive the 2010 Camaro pictured, until a deer hopped in front of me on I-79. Before that, I had a CTS sedan, two Firebird Formulas, a convertible Trans Am, a Reatta, a couple of Monte Carlos, an Avenger coupe, a couple of Cavalier hatchbacks, and a Saturn coupe.

Thats not an odd failure. It happens quite fequently to Delco batteries.

I am hard on a battery, snow plowing at night. The best I have found so far is Walmart Energizer batterys.

I bought it because of thier hours of operation, but it has turned out to be the longest lasting battery I have tried.

I recall having to replace the battery in my '86 Cutlass but it was so long ago I forget just how long I'd had the first one. I also drove that car for ten years. I've traded about every 5 years since and haven't had to replace a battery. I'm sure the dealer does before they put it on the used car lot though.

    Re: Longest-lasting car battery?

My 2002 Caddy had its orginal battery installed in late September 2001... over 8 years and over 100,000 miles later it is still fine. Wish I could say the same about the AIR pump, the fuel pump, the water pump, the ignition switch, the CD player (two of them) the Catalytic converter , the crank sensors, the intermediate shaft (two of those too), both rear shocks and one front strut.

It'll depend a lot on how well the battery is treated. Every time the lights are left on...

    Re: Longest-lasting car battery?

I'm wondering when the first Lipo car battery will be put into service. There is really no need to have 50lbs sitting over the front end.

I never seem to have good luck with OEM batteries and have replaced 3 of them over the years with less than 30,000 miles. Their replacements then always seem to last the life of my ownership.
