Interesting E-Bay Find- an Imported Opel Insignia

Occasionally, I go onto eBay to see what kind of interesting cars from the past I can find for sale- Datsuns, Peugeots, Merkurs, Opels and other unusual cars from times past (at least in the US).

Well, today was one of those days and when I searched for Opel vehicles, I found one with a much newer model year than I would have expected- a 2011 Opel Insignia.

I just thought I would pass this along in case anyone wanted to check it out.

I sure miss seeing the old lightning-bolt stateside. My grandmother used to own an Opel Manta when I was a young kid (I had pretty fond memories of the car) and I have known others who have owned a few of the Opel GTs that used to be sold here through Buick dealers in the 70s.

It'd be awesome if GM brought Opel back to the states so that we could have access to a sporty division again.

Looks like a rebuilt Buick Regal with Opel trim parts.

Yep, it has a Buick VIN and what sounds like a salvage title.

I don't think they have the Opel insignia available with blue back lighting for the dials and monitors used for radio climate and driver information center, on Insignia it's always red... Just another reason why it's probably a fake/re-badge.

lol a regal t03 that grossinger in chicago ordered thinking it was a to4. the name of the configuration on the inovoice was t04. Also the worst color, Stone Metallic and msrp was $31,940, and yes a salvaged title.

It looks like someone posted this to Carscoop as well.

The folks there also seemed to be mostly leaning toward this being a Buick converted to an Opel. I have been trying to find examples of Opel Insignia vins to compare with the vin on this car but that has been more difficult than I would have expected.

I could sort-of reason that the rebuilt title listed for the vehicle was due to being a Gray Market vehicle (if actually an Opel) since Opels are not built for the US market.

On one hand, It seems that it would be difficult to get all of the Opel bits on this car here in the US and installing them would be a very time-consuming task. On the other hand, the incorrect instrument cluster backlighting is definitely a red-flag that something is probably amiss here.

One thing I can say though is real Opel or not, the thing looks pretty sharp.

It wouldn't be a time-consuming task if it were already smashed to pieces....

Obviously, you haven't seen all the Holden/G8 rebadges on the US roads.

But werent the early Regals build by Opel before moving to Canada?
Two reasons i say it was originally built as a Regal.
    (1) If it was an Opel, the VIN/build sticker wouldnt have said "conforms to US safety standards" etc. Thats not applicable for cars built for the European market.
    (2) The speedo would have been in kms, not miles.

Its obviously a salvaged Regal, repaired to look like a Insignia.

Re: Interesting E-Bay Find- an Imported Opel Insignia

It is a salvaged Regal transformed into an Opel Insignia... And it's not the first I've seen listed on ebay. I remember two others, and I'm sure there may have been more. This one looks more "Opelized" than the others. As others have stated, there have been quite a few Pontiacs (GTO's, G8's) turned into Holden models over the past two/three years as well. Most look like Holdens at first glance, but their interiors usually give them away... That and there aren't any Utes being imported to the States! (I've seen about a dozen G8's turned into Holden Utes! I met one fella who turned his perfectly good, non-wrecked G8 into a G8 ST (Ute) after finding out the ST was never going to come to the States!)

Most/all of this particular (Opel Insignia) seller's vehicles are rebuilt/salvage...

It looks like a well done cover-up, unless he swapped in a Buick Speedometer (gauge cluster) and it's the real deal. Maybe that's why the title is rebuilt. Some insurance companies won't insure those vehicles.
