Times goes so fast, it's a bit more then 20 years then the Miata/MX-5 is sold. Here a surviving 1990 model posted on Hemmings blog.

Yeah I remember in 1989, waiting for these to appear. They were selling for $5000 over invoice for a while. Nowadays Mazda offers incentives to move them.
When I sat in one at an auto show, my friends laughed at the sight of a tall person scrunched into such a small car. Looking *over* the windshield worked better than looking through it.
I could fit fine in a Protege though, which is what I bought a few years later.
How is a miata a 'find' again?
Miatas probably will become a future classic but they will never be worth 35k, too many were made. They are probably going to end up like their spiritual predecessor the MGB as an entry level classic car that doesn't cost much to buy or run.
What price does a good condition MGB go for in the States?
You can buy an Na MX5 series 1 with 25,000k that hasn't been 'hit hard' and repaired for AUD21,000 so I think asking USD35,000 is not likely be taken up by anyone sensible.
I get that the Miata/MX-5 is a low volume car.... But how Mazda could keep the body almost unchanged for over 20 years... Is that a new record?
Actually, people on the Miata forum have quite hard-felt opinions about the "different" body styles. An extra 200 pounds and an inch of wheelbase means something to those drivers.
