GM: 4 engines per model?

This is what the product guide says about the Vue engines:
Quote:
The 2008 Vue will launch in October 2007 with the ECOTEC 2.4L, ECOTEC 2.4L BAS Hybrid, 3.6L HF V6 with Direct-Injection, and the 3.6L HF V6 Two-Mode Hybrid.
Four powertrains? That's remarkable!
I hope they can sell all effectively.

Will this be the case for every GM model? Four powertrains?
Will Pontiac get any hybrids?

Re: GM: 4 engines per model?

Well if you look at it like me it won't sound as overwhelming.

Here's how you look at it:

TWO NATURALLY-ASPIRATED-
2.4L ECOTEC I4
3.6L High Feature V6 w/ DI

TWO HYBRIDS-
2.4L Hybrid
3.6L Two-Mode Hybrid

Re: GM: 4 engines per model?

No way they'll have all four at launch.

Two different hybrids offered in the same model will be a first, though.

Hopefully GM will get the point now that all of their new car launches need a hybrid version to go along with the standard version.

Re: GM: 4 engines per model?

If the dual mode hybrid is available on something like the VUE -- which is FWD/AWD -- doesn't that imply it'll be available on a slew of other FWD or AWD cars? Like say, the next Malibu?

It seems that GM will be launching a slew of hybrid cars next year, as well as their trucks.

Re: GM: 4 engines per model?

I'll go on the record as saying the 3.6L V6 Vue will not have direct injection. I really don't think their compact SUV/crossover will be sporting a Cadillac CTS 300+ HP engine for such a small vehicle. That would really hurt some of the exclusivity of the Cadillac too. Seeing as that engine can make 275 HP currently without DI, they are well matched with the 268 HP RAV-4. I could see the added costs of DI being absorbed for the hybrid 3.6L, if only to boost fuel economy, but even that sounds like a stretch to me.

Two hybrids is a surprise. Perhaps GM is not sure if people will want power and decent mileage (3.6 hybrid) or fuel economy only..

No. They want people to buy hybrids at high and low prices--not like the competition.

Re: GM: 4 engines per model?

The product guide is wrong.

The 2 mode system for transverse layouts isn't expected until 2009 at the earliest.

No way the 3.6L HF DI goes into the Vue on launch

The engines will be for 2008...

2.4L Ecotec (in my mind, a mistake - just use the cheap hybrid)
2.4L Ecotec mild hybrid (BAS)
both with 4 speed autos, just consider how many vehicles should get the 6 speeds first. DTS for instance?

3.6L HF 6 speed auto making around 275hp

In the future, maybe 09-10, expect the Redline with the DI 3.6L and the 2 mode hybrid - probably paired with the coming 3.0L HF
