Can't let the 2011 Hyundai Sonata win this poll ...

2010 is not the Year of the Sonata.

Wow, that sucks. The Sonata is winning by like 1%.

On the bright side, the Leaf is losing big time.

Who in their right mind voted for the Sonata over the Volt?

Hyundai has an extensive PR web machine to populate forums and web media with positive Hyundai news...

Yeah... like most web surveys, this one looks to have been hit by a fan-boi blitz (perhaps more than one). No way the Sonata deserves COY over the Volt (or the Leaf for that matter).

I think which will win depends upon which premise you vote under. From an engineering standpoint the Volt is a marvel, but there are those (like me) who are convinced that electric-heavy hybrids of this nature will never be practical from a cost perspective and, as such, see them as rolling marketing campaigns pointing happily at a future that does not actually exist. Then you have the Hyundai, which while flawed, is absolutely putting that Korean brand on the mid-size map in term of sales volume and popularity.

So, do you vote for marketplace significance even if the car making those strides is sub par in some respects....or the far the engineering marvel that is more about marketing than the market itself? Things aren't always as clear cut as they may seem on the surface.

I did. Just because I didn't like the tone of the OP.

goodness me....the Sonota is such an average car. Car of the year needs to be something that changes the game for its respective year.

Re: Get Out the Vote! Can't Let Hyundai Win!

IDK, the Hyundai Sonata makes a strong case (though I voted for the Volt).

The Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are not for everyone, the Nissan Leaf has serious range limitations while the Volt is up there in price. I can get a CTS for the price of a Volt.

The Hyundai Sonata mixes fuel economy that is unmatched with power, the base model gets 35MPG on the highway which is better then any other mid sized sedans on the market. Now everyone is playing catch up to the Hyundai Sonata and its combo of 200BHP and 35MPG (everyone else is making around 170BHP).

Then they upped the ante with a turbo model, the Turbo Hyundai gets 22/33 while the V-6 Toyota gets 20/29 and the V-6 Accord gets 20/30. On top of the fuel economy bonus you get with the Hyundai you also get 274BHP and 269ft-lbs of torque. Not only will it pass its V-6 rivals on the road but it will also pass the gas station up as well.

In other words while the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are land mark vehicles for those who will buy it. The Hyundai Sonata is a land mark vehicle for a much bigger crowd of people, I guess its a matter of the Volt being green and more high tech but the Sonata being more mainstream.
