Drove my first CVT tranny car

So my parents Just bought a 2010 chevy equinox awd. That was for my mom. My dad had his truck and he works 40min from our house so it was to much on gas and he was putting a lot of miles on it. So my dad went to look for a small jeep it was used and at a nissan dealer. Well he comes home with a 2012 nissan rogue base. He ended up leasing it and hes just going to turn it in at the end of the lease. My mom will drive it since its smaller then the equinox and drives less. When I first saw it i was like that thing is ugly. But what ever its not my car. So my dad took the equinox today and it was snowing. I still have not found a new car for me. I Cant take the g5 out in the snow so i took the rogue to work. You sit funny in it seemed like the seats are up high. The mirror adjustment is in a really stupid spot. The gauge cluster stays lit and the lights do not come on or off on there own what the hell? The temp kept flashing in my face driving it so it distracted me. The fuel bar where it goes up and down also distracted me so i turned it off. The ride was nice and the thing was really fun to turn it tight spots like my cavalier. Then it came to the drivetrain. The motor was soooooo loud it sounds bad at high rpms. Then this stupid tranny. Im waiting for it to shift and its not shifting it felt so strange. I put it in sport mode to see what that did and it kinda changed the shifts back to a normal shift pattern of a normal tranny. All and all its a nice around town suv for my mom. It really cant come close to the equinox in anyway. They where parked next to each other in the driveway today and the equinox is a lot bulkier and way more back seat room.

My CVT experience was with our Ford Freestyle and several rental Dodge Calibers. Took some getting used to but not a feature I would seek out or avoid depending on the other features of the vehicle I was looking
at.

Its not that I didn't like it it was just odd. As the car is going into the rpms the tranny just keeps going kinda like how a car acts when its transmission is slipping. I like manual shift cars anyway and i think the rogue is perfect for a manual transmission. Its little and where the shifter is its perfect placement.

When I asked my dad if it had the cvt tanny he goes whats that? I told him to go hit the gas the rpms will stay at 5000 rpms but the car keeps going. He comes out with it was shifting funny i though it was because it was new and needed to break in.

I think the Rogue as a vehicle is an appealing package. I assume the high seating is imitating Ford's "Command Seating" from its 500/Taurus/Freestyle/Taurus X/Flex platform.

You've got to remember the Rogue is the base CUV for Nissan. Even in the upper trim levels its still cheap. I will agree the engine noise is outrageous.

The CVT takes getting used to. I drive an 07 Maxima and my GTO is a manual. One extreme to the other and every time I switch its weird for the first few blocks. I love our CVT for traveling though and I will honestly miss it once it goes away.

Being that i've driven several CVT's including some Altima's Maxima's and Versa's I agree with you %100 that they suck. They get very noisy and feel very unrefined specially at higher speeds. Although the CVT did feel a little better in the Maxima being mated to a 6 cylinder than in it's younger brother's 4, would still not have it on my shopping list.

My Lexus RX400h had an eCVT which although better than some it was an experience in that area that I would not like to repeat.

I liked the 2013 Altima I drove. And I'd made up my mind that I didn't like the CVT idea. But proof was in the pudding.

To each his own. Works fine for me.

My only experience with a CVT transmission was in a Subaru Legacy, and I actually really enjoyed it. Yeah it gets some getting use too, but I think the fuel economy gains may be worth it.

I recently had a nizzan versa? while in Vegas. It too was a CVT tranny.
A emblem on the rear said "ultra drive" IIRC.

What a pile! I thought the tranny was bad and was slipping...........
Then I thought CVT tranny!
Esp. driving thru the mountain passes from Vegas to Laughlin. The motor was
screaming at 5000 rpm at 40 mph ! On any slight hill the motor went nuts and
drove me crazy.

I can see a short engine life and major warranty repairs after the warranty is up.

Ugh! I can't see why anyone would buy this car ..............

Plus, if Soob markets it as organic, Middle-Earth friendly, and hemp- or kayak-related in some obscure way, it'll go over like free money.

The Current 4-speed Auto in the Forester is a crapy transmission so I think a CVT will be an major improvement. I know the Subaru fans are very excited aobu the 6-speed in the Forester

My father has an 09 Altima Hybrid. I didn't really care for the CVT, it feels lifeless or soulless. I am so used to shifting that it just felt odd.
