Chrysler trumpets 2014 Ram ProMaster full-size van

LOS ANGELES -- Chrysler announced Tuesday its newest commercial vehicle -- the 2014 Ram ProMaster full-size van.

The ProMaster is based on the Fiat Ducato sold in Europe and is the first of two vans expected to migrate from Italy to the U.S.

The van is to go on sale in the fall of 2013 and compete with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit vans.

For the North American market, the Ducato was redesigned to be consistent with Ram brand attributes, features and powertrains.

In Europe, Fiat offers commercial vehicle customers a number of options, including the Ducato and the smaller Doblo, both of which were expected to have variations for the Ram lineup.

A Ram version of the Doblo would compete against Ford's successful Transit Connect and a new Transit Connect Wagon on display in Los Angeles that is to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013.

I was just going over my 2010 notes regarding suggesting to General Services Administration (Government Wide Policy Group) that they press the automakers for "best of breed" fuel economies ... and only 3~4 years later ... it looks like everyone ... EXCEPT GM ... is in the running now that Chrysler-Fiat have entered the frey.

The Ducato is already old, so it better be a big update.

No specs, pictures, or powertrain info? I guess this announcement is strictly to put the Fiat and Chrysler names back on the radar of companies that buy commercial vans in the US.

It wont be easy. The Ducato was all-new the year Chrysler and Daimler split up.

I think then the Ducato might get not a complete reskin and restyling body but a big makeover enough to look still new.

So the 2014 ProMaster has the potential to be substantially different from the current Ducato.

Don't forget the Nissan NV, which is now cargo AND passenger. All it's missing is the much-needed dually setup.
I hope it doesn't take a blowout and a wreck to make them aware of LR tire issues regarding passenger vans of this class.

Allpar has a spyshot. It appears to be a straight-forward badgejob.

Huh, I was hoping they'd change the headlamps at least to be more Ram pickup like.
