    Chevrolet Historical Services (or similar)?

I know there is PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) that will give you a packet containing the history of your Pontiac, but is there anything similar for Chevrolet? Does GM do anything like this?

You can get a restoration packet that has generic info on your year/model car, but no specific info on that particular car as built. From what I read a Chevy sold in Canada does have some actual records.

Yeah, the Restoration Packet is the only item of which I am familiar. While I know they ask for your VIN, there is no car-specific information included in the packet. However, the packet does have information to help you decipher the codes on the car....

The RP is available through the Chevrolet Customer Service line, 1-800-222-1020.

So I could do this for my 1981 Pontiac Bonneville?

Are you speaking of past service work done to your vehicle, or just general info.???

Your local GM store can give you past Service history on more recent vehicles, but I cannot say if it goes back as far a vehicles from 1981 though.

Hmmm.... Carfax (depending on how old the car is) might be another option.

Or, do a title search at your state's DMV...that won't give you mechanical info, but it will tell you how many owners the car has endured .

I can desipher some of the VIN# stuff with my 1976-1999 American cars book. I also have the 1946-75 and the 1900-1990 truck one.

    How about this?
    VIN Derivative

All engines and transmissions are stamped or laser etched with a partial vehicle identification number (VIN), which was derived from the complete VIN. A VIN derivative contains the following nine positions:

    Position

    Definition

    Character

    Description

    1

    GM Division Identifier

    1

    Chevrolet

    --

    --

    2

    Pontiac

    2

    Model Year

    W

    1998

    3

    Assembly Plant

    2

    St. Therese

    4-9

    Plant Sequence Number

    --

    --

A VIN derivative can be used to determine if a vehicle contains the original engine or transmission, by matching the VIN derivative positions to their accompanying positions in the complete VIN:

    VIN Derivative Position

    Equivalent VIN Position

    1

    3

    2

    10

    3

    11

    4-9

    12-17
