Re: Autoextremist: America speaks, and Washington is forced to listen.
I'd like to see Rick Wagoner sit before Congress and do a long presentation not of how he's going to save GM. But instead, focus on how the government has destroyed GM.
CAFE alone has completely undermined GM's bargaining postion with the UAW. They are forced to build small cars in the US at a loss because of CAFE. The UAW knows that GM has to cave. CAFE was never about fuel economy, it was only about protecting overpaid union jobs. If not, then why don't cars imported by GM count towards CAFE? Without CAFE, GM could move small car production out of the country, unless the UAW agreed to wages similar to what transplant workers get. He'll never have a bigger audience. After he's through, talk to reporters for as long as they want to listen. And just lay the truth on the line about the government and the UAW. Conclude his presentation to Congress by announcing GM's bankruptcy filing. GM could survive Chapter 11. I don't think the public hates GM or hates American cars. They hate the UAW. If you could very publicly take the company in Chapter 11 and very publicly destroy the UAW, I think people would be eager to support the New GM. This scenario will never happen, but it should.

Wow. Usually Mr. Delorenso is a bit radical for my tastes but this is bang on. A lot of small to medium county and city governments are going to be VERY hurt by the closing of franchises. I can think of one city near my hometown that derives a full 40% of its general fund revenue from its auto row. They are already in a bad way and if they were to lose big 3 portion of the dealers, (4.5 out of 9) they would be bankrupt.
