In 2000 was GM's revitalization...

I often wonder... what if, in 2000, GM has begun its revitalization? The new Saturn, the new Caddy, the begining of the new Buick, GMC/Chevy's new trucks and begining of changing Chevy... the new engines and trannies... from 2000-2002 if that happened, I wonder where would we be today? Would GMAC still be part of GM? Would GM have lost billions upon billions in such short time? Would Toyota be threatening GM's place as #1? How would GM's profitability look? Would GM absolutely be dominating? How much would they be worrying about the neww CAFE rating - would they even have taken effect?

Uhh.... Yes? If we're seeing the revolution that started early 2 years ago, we'd be on top of the pile by many, many generations.

But it didn't happen. Whatevs.

Re: In 2000 was GM's revitalization...

GM is a business. They couldn't start the revolution then. They still had capital that hadn't paid for itself yet. They key point is that it has started now. They are getting a stable of great products.

Product, product, product, product, product will keep things going.

It likely started long before that; the average time to market is 3 years, so likely 2004 would be the watershed point, perhaps even earlier.

Solstice and Sky are an example, got to market ASAP, but still took more than 2 years, IIRC.

When did the CTS come out? 2002? 2003? That's when I think GMs revitalization truly started.

It wouldnt have. They had started a revival sevearl times, but never put 100% effort into the cars after the initial launch. A lot of talk, and some great ideas but nothing really reguarding great product. Im reading All Corvettes Are Red and I am understanding a lot of what went down in the late 80's to early 90's.

Yeah, they were brand revivals. They launched Saturn, gave Oldsmobile a revival, and I would argue, even though it is not widely considered, that they gave Buick a revival in 1997 (Century, Regal, Park Avenue, updated LeSabre).

Re: In 2000 was GM's revitalization...

there have been many "revivals" over the years. this is the first time the media has agreed with the new product though. that's the difference.

Re: In 2000 was GM's revitalization...

So um, you're saying if they brought someone like Lutz in to GM in around 1993/1994? We can say coulda/shoulda/woulda but the fact is that GM is doing what it needs to right now. GM wasn't ready back in the 1990's, this revitalization came just in time.

Re: In 2000 was GM's revitalization...

I belive that GM had a "car guy" back in the late 80's. Gotta go back in the book to find his name, but the whole company was not in the same mindset they are now. The threat of GM losing major ground, losing its image in the mind of the public, and losing everything they have built in its 100 years finally hit them over the past 4 years.
