Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

They should build a H3 Hybrid. If Toyota can build a very nice Highlander Hybrid then GM should build a H3 Hybrid.

It would sell well. There are people that still want the SUV size and to have the extra kick out of a true hybrid then so much the better. You can get 30mpg with the Highlander Hybrid. With no loss to cargo space...

The H3 Hybrid would be sweet!

And I agree with your disagreeing with me.

I actually meant that "The hybrid "function" wouldn't have any BAD effect on off-roadability."

Of course a Volt-style, E-Flex series hybrid would just be running electric anyway, with the engine only kicking in to recharge the battery when needed. And the power/ torque is only limited by the size of the motor you put in it.

Electric doesn't HAVE to mean weak.

GM could turn this into a win win. If they spin the Hummer as a electro/diesel or "other" 20+ MPG star they could win over the nay sayers...

I think in time Hybrid powerplants will make into all of the GM line.

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

Here's an idea:

Have a Hybrid Hummer run over Paris Hilton...

But as for Hummer... Ditch the H2 (please, I'm begging you), and put the new 2.9 Diesel in the H3. The H3 might actually SELL if GM would advertise it instead of the H2. And bring in a toughened-Theta-II H4 to draw in Liberty buyers (with the new Liberty's atrocious styling, that should be an easy task).

With the new 2-mode hybrids, I think there may be some possibilities. Although, out of the 24 hybrid vehicles GM is launching in the next 4 years, don't expect any to be in the Hummer line.

The Highlander and the H3 go through totally different testing -- Hummers have to go through all kinds of off-road testing for every component, making it difficult to put a whole truck together. What may work on every other GM SUV may not work on the Hummers due to the off-road requirements. I know that wheel/tire testing for Hummers is some of the most difficult and GM even went to the manufacturers and had them change certain aspects of the H3 tires before they could clear them for use.

If we ever see a Hybrid Hummer, I suspect it will be a 2 mode system, and switch nearly entirely to gas during off-roading when more power is necessary. Heck, the Hybrid yukon switches to gas when it gets warm and you're running the A/C!
