Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

I think hybrid powertrains as an option in all vehicles are going to be a reality sooner rather than later. Will it make economic sense to the purchaser? Maybe not. Will it win PR? It should. It is the ultimate way for people to pay up or shut up on the Fuel Economy question.

I think the Volt's system makes the most sense however. I would LOVE to see the Volt with a small turbine engine as the generator. That would get incredible gas mileage!!!

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

Want to shock the world? Want to get more publicity than one could ever hope for? Want people to think this is the "new GM"?

Stop making the H2 and make the Volt in the same plant. I know, it's not happening...but one can dream.

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

Is the T800 even capable of Two-Mode or will it have to wait a while until it is moved over to the T900?

Should the company sacrifice some capability to offer a Hybrid?
If Jeep can call the Compass and Patriot "Trail Rated", GM can make H2/H3 hybrids. Not to mention having the H4 debut with a hybrid powertrain. Something the Wrangler doesn't offer.

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

Secondly, the brick-like aerodynamics of both models, in addition to their porkier-than-most curb weights, would probably negate many of the benefits that would come from a hybrid drivetrain.

This hasn't stopped Lexus from creating their hybrids.

Why? The hybrid "function" wouldn't have any effect on off-roadability.

There goes that "electrics are quiet" image.

Some truth here I suspect. And a Hybrid Hummer? What, go from 12 mpg to 14? Aw come on guys, let's get back to the real world and forget Paris.

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

I think GM should go beyond plain old hybrid Hummers and make Hummer their primary brand for testing and debuting alternate drivetrain technology. It makes sense for a number of reasons:

1. It'll help defray the environmentalist outrage and gas-guzzler image.
2. It'll keep Hummers hip with the Hollywood crowd and relevant with the general public.
3. Hummers are already overpriced for what you get, so cost effectiveness doesn't play as large of a role as it would for a Chevy.
4. By making Hummers that are less reliant on gas stations, they can add to their marketing image of vehicles that can go anywhere and do anything.

I want to see a Biodiesel/Solar powered H2 Superhybrid.

Give us electric and hydrogen options. Give us hydraulic regenerative breaking.

Now that would be one cool PR statement.

I disagree. The awesome instant torque of an electric motor assisting a gas engine could make for an enhanced offroading experience. They just need ot ensure the gas engine is never powered off during 4WD lo operation.

A go-anywhere SUV...
That gets 15+mpg...
That has luxuries like a Yukon Denali?

Sounds like the ultimate status machine.

Re: Will GM Build A Hummer Hybrid?

its heavier and its aerodynamics are bad, so the hybrids systems weight is more easily hidden and if the edges were softened then that would also benifit the mileage. even not, the cost of the system would also be more hidden in the large price of a hummer.
