Two Mode Sierra coming to Chicago-- on sale this year.

Chicago 2008: GMC Sierra Two-Mode Hybrid is coming
Quote:
The Sierra Hybrid goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2008 and is based on the strong and capable Sierra platform that was introduced for the 2007 model year. It will be offered in the Crew Cab body style on both 2WD and 4WD models. Each model is equipped with several standard, popular features, including StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. Sierra Hybrid also offers dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags, and it is the only full-size truck with five-star side-impact ratings in federal crash tests.

Hybrid details

The Sierra Hybrid's fuel-saving performance is derived from GM's advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. GM's hybrid technology system not only enables the Sierra to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows the Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods.

I think I will wait for the 4.5 liter diesel, though they can always do a dual mode hybrid diesel like what the Europeans are messing around with, which would definitely raise the CAFE mandated fleet averages

Like the Tahoe/Yukon 2-Ms this should get an EPA rating of about 21 combined. That's a big jump especially in city driving. In capable hands it might get real world values in the 25+ range.

Just about everything about GM's FS hybrids-except, of course, the ultra-gauche decal on the sides-works for me.

My opinions on the diesel are mixed. Performance (acceleration & passing power) will suffer. Though 500ft-lbs is nice, there's a lack of HP. It'll be quick off the line and run out of steam on the highway for that 60-80mph burst which is where power is most needed.

I'd say 22 combined. The pickups are lighter than the SUVs. I agree 25 is easily attainable. In pure highway driving I can regularly achieve 22mpg in my Avalanche.

here is the deal, you really dont need to have 300BHP in a mid size sedan (even though that is what automakers are will probably soon be making).

I own a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 3800 V-6 making some 200BHP and 230ft-lbs of torque, it redlines at 6,000rpms and doesnt have that much pull about 5,000rpms. When driving around town and even merging onto the highway I generally rev to a max of 4,000rpms. With that said a Diesel in my car that makes lets say only 160BHP but 350ft-lbs of torque will be faster in the powerband that I use then the engine that is in it now.

Other way around...It'll be like the Duramax in its bigger brother 2500hds....slow out of the hole, and kick ass on the highway when your turbos are spooled and ready.

Not necessarily. If it's geared right, the diesel would be highly competitive with the hybrid, if not quicker, as well as having probably close to double the towing capacity, and the same if not better mileage. If GM mates a version of the 6L80-E with the 4500 Duramax, that potentially could be one heck of a combo. Supposedly the 4500 is going to require urea injection, which is the only downside.

I am with you, I hate urea, I wish they would find a way to do without it like Honda is working on. I see someone said that diesels suffer from lack of hp, but that does not really matter in a truck, what matters is the torque, and if you want more horsepower, there are upgrades out there to get it that do not void the factory warranty. I love diesels, remind me of the musclecars with all that low end torque, plus in Europe they have diesels that get 60+ mpg on the highway in cars and crossovers, which is why I prefer them to hybrids.

I would as well,as long as the price differential is reasonable.
