Spied: 2010 GMC Terrain

Spied: 2010 GMC Terrain

Left Lane News is now showing spy photographs of the upcoming GMC Terrain crossover. GM unveiled a "GMC Terrain" at the Kuwait Motor Show in 2007 that ultimately turned out to be just a rebadged Saturn Vue/Opel Antara. That Terrain is exclusive to some overseas markets and will not be sold in North America; that is what our Saturn Vue is for. The U.S. Terrain will be based off of the Theta II platform along with the next-generation Chevrolet Equinox. It is expected to be bigger in size than the current Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, which it replaces.

GMI has not heard any official numbers for powertrains, but it is expected that the Terrain will use the 3.6L High-Feature V6 with direct-injection. With that, horsepower numbers could range from 280-304. There is no set plan as to which auto show the new Terrain will be unveiled at, but we anticipate seeing it at the 2008 LA Auto Show in November. The Terrain is likely to contend with the Nissan Murano in the American market. --Nsap

Re: Spied: 2009 GMC Terrain

How can the terrain become larger than the current nox? I say this because of the rumors on here about the nox getting a optional row of third seats? dosen't that create even more overlap?? I guess I am just confused.

The next-generation Equinox and the new Terrain will be on the same platform, so they are going to be the same size regardless.

I knew that, I guess I should of said that why is GM making these larger when they have the lambda's?

Re: Spied: 2009 GMC Terrain

I wouldn't be suprised if the Equinox and Terrain both get a 3rd row seat. Probably just a kid sized seat so it can compete with the Rav4 and some other smaller suv's. It can't get too big or it will compete with the Lambda's. Dimensionally the Rav4 isn't hardly any bigger, if at all, than the Saturn Vue. Better packaging is the key. If you want a big comfy 3rd seat you will still have to buy a bigger vehicle.

Compared to the Lambda's these need to be smaller and lighter so they offer some fuel economy benefits (although the Vue can't seem to accomplish any better fuel economy) even if they offer a small 3rd row.

The same reason Toyota's RAV4 and Highlander both have third row seats...the market wants them. The current Theta's are not far from being able to have an optional third row seat now, so they are not going to be adding much mass to the new ones.

Re: Spied: 2009 GMC Terrain

I don't have any problem with them growing slightly since the Lambdas are so big. I do think they need a base powerplant below the 3.6 as an economy leader. Whether that's a 2.8 or 3.0L HF or a 2.4 Ecotec / 6sp combo that is still respectable performance wise. I also think this sets things up for a one of the small concept utes since having the stretched Theta as the baseline is pretty big.

Will this be a 2009 or 2010 model?

I'm curious though, how big are we talking about here for the next Equinox? Even though the current one does not have a third row, isn't it already the size of a Rav4? This is just going by personal experience, I don't have the numbers in front of me right now. It just seems like everything I have read is implying the next Nox and the like will be larger than anything in the compact class.

And if the next Nox does get to be more of a midsize, do you know if GM is planning a CR-V competitor minus the third row?

Re: Spied: 2009 GMC Terrain

I hope they don't get rid of the sliding second-row seat currently found in the Equinox and Torrent, but I'm sure it will be tossed. I'm sure they will be Captiva sized which is about the same as the Vue only a little longer. The third row will be only for smaller children.

The next Equinox and the Terrain should debut for '10 shouldn't they? That would leave the Equinox and Torrent alone for '09 except for a drivetrain update.

Re: Spied: 2009 GMC Terrain

With the Equinox and Torrent (aka Terrain) growing in size, GM will need a new smaller CUV. I say bring back the Niva name... make it in the same vein as the old Tracker... relatively light and simple and affordable, with actual off-road capabilities. Surely they could work something out so that Suzuki had a version to increas volume... they Chevy version could go to Europe and other international markets, where small CUVs are catching on. Actually, they could do a Saturn / Opel version, and get rid of the Outlook.

The main size difference, from my understanding, is going to be in width. Which they need more of, because the current Theta's feel small compared to the Edge/Murano.

Re: Spied: 2010 GMC Terrain

comparing these pics to the saab 9-4x concept, the two appear to share many of the vehicle hard points; this is not gmc. it is saab. note the 6 lugs on the wheels, the visible grill shape, and the overall green house.

Does this mean that I should wait and not buy my Equinox Sport now?
