INDIANAPOLIS - The Chevrolet Silverado Parallel Hybrid Truck (PHT) provided a real-world demonstration of General Motors' hybrid technology after a local power outage threatened to shutdown Chevy's largest annual motorsport display at the NASCAR Brickyard 400 on Saturday.

The Chevy Silverado PHT features four 120-volt, 20 amp electrical auxiliary outlets under the rear seat of the cab and in the pickup bed that can accommodate up to four accessories while driving or when parked. The truck could power tools or appliances for up to 32 hours non-stop.

When the power went out in Indy affecting everything from the scoring tower to a large portion of the midway, a 2005 Chevy Silverado PHT was simply repositioned to power the various audio systems being utilized in the Chevy American Revolution display to entertain thousands of race fans.

"With some quarter of a million race fans at this venue, our ability to communicate is critical and without power everything comes to its knees as we lose all ability to communicate with our guests, " said Terry Dolan, Marketing Manager for Chevy Racing. "Having that Silverado hybrid allowed us to recoup and get back in action after only a couple of minutes. It was pretty remarkable how easily we were able to overcome such a potentially disruptive event."

The Silverado pickup was used for nearly two hours to power the audio systems being used by the emcee of the event, former MTV veejay Ricky Rachtman, as well as sound panels broadcasting XM radio stations during intermissions.

Why don't they put outlets on all the trucks, what a feature!

You could power radios, tool battery chargers, etc.

I live in Indy, and I would have heard if they lost power there.

But nice plug for the truck, even though untrue.

Gotta admit that yes, that is really good publicity for the Silverado Hybrid. Just a question though. Wouldn't the sound systems at the track require a little bit more juice than the Silverado could offer?

Regardless, my regards to a useful and dependable truck. Even at NASCAR.

Similar story from a year ago, when during the big Midwest power outage, a few Pontiac dealers kept their businesses running with the power outlet from the Vibes parket outside. Enough to run a desktop calculator, etc.

Yeah I doubt they plug those audio systems into your normal household sockets. This sounds like something you'd normally hear about an import (Honda Civic hybrid gets lost family out of woods, 500 miles on one tank!). Maybe the media is geeting less biased? :mf_boff:

I love GM and hate to be cynical, but it sounds like a Business Wire news story (e.g. - paid for by GM).

I'm also surprised that they were able to find one:

A. Outside of Florida and California (where sales are limited to)

B. From the meager number produced

fixed or not GM is starting to think about how to sell an "UGLY " truck as mentioned above. smart way to prove your technologie. my dealership is recieving 7 hybrid trucks i sorta cant wait to see them and working on them maybe a diffrent storie.

kinda wondering what all the tree hugging hippies think a bout a truck with a clean power source.

Nice plug for the truck, but it smells like a load of pre-planned bull crap to me. 480W of combined output isn't going to give you much entertainment in a venue of that size.

Do you really want to know? It won't be very useful information.
