Silverado burns less gas Than a Toyota Prius!!!

From GM Training; Did You Know?
A FlexFuel Silverado or Sierra Pickup that uses E85 fuel
burns less gasoline over 12,000 miles of driving than a Toyota Prius?

It's true, because E85 fuel is made of 85% ethanol and just 15% gasoline. Plus, ethanol is made from home-grown, renewable resources – which helps lessen U.S. dependency on foreign oil sources and supports American agriculture. In addition, ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline – which means reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

GM is an industry leader in producing FlexFuel vehicles that are capable of operating on E85 fuel. Current models include Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Impala and Monte Carlo, plus GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL.

Please encourage everyone on your sales team to view the upcoming IDL broadcast – Live Green, Go Yellow. GM's E85 FlexFuel Vehicles. They will learn more about FlexFuel technology, the role FlexFuel vehicles play in GM's fuel-efficiency strategy and, most importantly, how they can sell the features and benefits of FlexFuel vehicles and use GM's leadership position as a competitive advantage.

yeah, i imagine we have E85 somewhere in the metro area, but they're few and far between. if you could find the stuff it'd be great, but right now there's no infrastructure.

Re: Silverado burns less gas Than a Toyota Prius!!!

This is a silly factually baseless comparison. You could also say a diesel Silverado burns less gasoline then a Prius also; and while "true", it is also meaningless.

You definately make a valid point Camaro Freak. Also doesn't E85 only have 60% of gasolines range when it comes to miles per gallon. That said, I'd rather use E85 than gasoline. I mean I'm tired funding terrorists everytime I fill up my car. BTW Nice avatar man. Your giving me Transformers The Movie flashbacks with that Unicron image.

Re: Silverado burns less gas Than a Toyota Prius!!!

So although it burns less gas, I guess the concern would be how much energy is used to get the ethanol (85% of the mix) combined with the gas to form a usable fuel? You save somewhere but lose else where i guess?

Dont think I have seen any e85 pumps around here, anyone who has seen one, how does the cost compare against regular gas?

Infrastructure is coming. I've been keenly interested in this. Google "ethanol news" and read up on the ethanol plants coming online. Every week, a new plant is being constructed.

Its really good news. Currently, the midwest is where the trend is starting.

Just 4 years ago, this country produced less than a billion gallons of ethanol. Last year, we produced 4 billion gallons of ethanol, and that number is expected to double again.

Ethanol plants and biofuels in general are the latest place where investment capital is being funnelled.

Yes, 4 billion gallons is just a drop in the bucket today, but it is highly feasble that in the next few years, we will actually see a drop in imported oil.

This is not hype folks, its real, and its coming.

If they are going to sell these trucks, then gas companies will have to make E85 fuel available somehow.

Too bad it currently takes 1.29 gallons of diesel to create 1.0 gallons of corn-based ethanol. There is a reason it takes $billions in subsidies to keep this horribly wasteful corn-based ethanol around.

I got gas at a station w/ e85. It was 15 cents less than 87 octane.

This E85 Silverado is nothing to crow about at this time either. It's just totally impractical to pay the extra cost when there just aren't many E85 fueling stations.

Re: Silverado burns less gas Than a Toyota Prius!!!

They use sugar based ethanol in brazil to fantastic success. I hope more bio-fuels become mainstream, as long as they are on par with fossil fuels. In addition, if we used more nuclear energy in the power grid it would make it much more feasible to create these biofuels without using additional fossil fuels.

Too bad the article did not state how much fossil energy is required to produce 1 gallon of gasoline.

Extra cost? It is a free option for the 2006 Silverado 1500 with the 5300. Same with the 2006 Tahoe and Suburban. It is standard on the new 2007 Tahoe.
