Bah, that ain't sick. You want sick?

Me and probably a few other Fiero enthusiasts are reading about this motor and the 2.9 and are going, 'Hmmmm...'.

Re: And now a reading from the book of Torque.

nice job quoting epa/unloaded fuel economy. it's 14/19 with the 4 speed. gas engines take a dive in economy as they're loaded...not so with diesels. the 5.3 may have similar hp, but the diesel has 54% more torque!

i bet they'll still need hood clearance so the exhaust manifold doesn't cook the paint off

he just designed the best truck diesel...cut him some slack on the typo. besides, it should read 231 kW / 700 N-m.

imo, hd trucks will go diesel-electric, like locomotives. caps for acceleration, and a small battery for cruise.

Re: And now a reading from the book of Torque.

I don't think this will be the hit it would have if released a few years ago since the higher diesel fuel and maintence will offset the extra economy (and probably then some) in the 1/2 ton, but I'm curious if this will become a option in the HD's. This would be a big hit for that market if it could generate better fuel economy than the current diesels, and the power would be more than sufficent for most users.

Sick alright - exactly the sick thought that's needed for all GM rear drive sedan/coupe/wagons (oh OK put it into the trucks/utes as well) should do wonders for average fuel economy - hell going by the numbers performance certainly won't lack either!

Re: And now a reading from the book of Torque.

I could see a 3.8 or 4.0L V8 version 255-280HP 320-350TQ created for use in Zeta. May be a v6 version for Lambda and a 4 for the compacts...

Re: And now a reading from the book of Torque.

i have a feeling this wont be a stand alone engine option. i think a rebirth of the 1500hd is going to take place.

that doesnt mean im not interested however.

also, what does all this new innovations talk do to the aftermarket? hopefully banks will be able to do something with this engine. thats one of the biggest draws to deisel as well (for me anyway), the insane amounts of power gains with very few mods.

Only on big trucks.
The only additional thing I have to pay for on my Hilux is a fuel filter at each service - about NZ$20.

as long as the mpg and the benefits outpace the price and the higher price of diesel compared to unleaded, these will fly off the lots most certainly

It won't sell in decent numbers for that price unless it gets 40 mpg. It might, however, sell pretty well in full sized vans, HD trucks, and HD suburbans, but it will replace the 6.0L engine. GM will need a smaller diesel to replace the 5.3L engine.

There there is the reliability issue.....GM has a mixed history with diesel engines. The Duramax and the 6.5L engine are okay, but I remember my parents 350 diesel. It may have gotten good mileage for the 20,000 miles or so that it ran, but it was a terribly unreliable engine.

Then there is the fact that Dodge is putting out a new Ram with a lighter duty cummins engine and Ford is building a less powerful 4.4L diesel for it's half tons that is expected to only cost around $1800 over the 5.4L engine.

There is a lot going against this new 4.5L engine. I hope for GM's sake that they can move them at a resonable price and that it scores great EPA ratings....but I have my doubts.
Good points...
I'm interested to see how this new motor turns out but I have no use for a full size but it could be good or bad. Right now the truck market is in the crapper. The people who are buying them is construction companies and people who actually have a use for them. Other than that lots are just stacked with trucks right now.

I have not seen many diesels on the used lots around here but it may change.

My guess is that it will be a rebirth of the 1500HD as someone posted previous in this thread. Couple that with the price of the diesel engine, Fuel prices, And maintenence it might not sell too fast. I mean, I drive a 99 S10 ZR2 that gets an average of 17-18 mpg city and highway combined. I drive 30 miles a day and every weekend I'm paying $50 to fill up. Who's gonna pay double that for a Diesel truck?
