Have a feeling they are holding out for a major refresh of these trucks.

Upgrade the interior and restyle them after last years SEMA concept ,add the V/8 and I think sales would really pickup.

Re: No V8 For Colorado/Canyon Until 2009

I gotta agree... the C/C twins EXTERIOR is much nicer than the Sonoma/S10 was. Especially the front clip.

The interior on the other hand is BAD. Do a major interior refresh and drop in some better engine choices and it would be a hit.

look at the up side. we could all be Ford fans waiting for a redesign of the Ranger.....

i'd love to see a V8 Canyon, but with fuel prices on the rise, trucks aren't exactly the best focus of development and factory tooling dollars. GM needs to get the Malibu up and running, and they need to refresh the Cobalt and make it a little more competitive. forget the trucks for a little bit, get the cars right.

I agree they need to get the cars right, but I disagree with you about the trucks, they need to get them right as well. Colorado/Canyon needs work. A V8 isn't going to give significantly worse mileage than the I5, heck it might even be better. The innards of the Col/Can look like it was made by Fisher-Price and some of the gaps look like extra storage nooks. They NEED help.

Re: No V8 For Colorado/Canyon Until 2009

Problem with GM and Ford not spending any money on their mid-sized trucks is that young buyers who drive the Taco or Frontier will look to upgrade to a Tundra or Titan instead of a Silverado, Sierra or F-150. It is ridiculous to neglect these trucks and let Toyota and Nissan gain future market share. Just my humble opinion.

Re: No V8 For Colorado/Canyon Until 2009

I know what the game plan was with atlas and it was a shame the the Isuzu design couldn't fit the 6. But with the 360 on the way out it's time for GM to bite the bullet. Even though they are generally good engines (I own one), they don't get very good mileage and there just doesn't seem to be future applications. I'd bet a 3.5L HV would probably drive better and get better mileage than the 4-cyl atlas and you could offer the 3.9 and a V8 as step ups.

The I5 get enought power. With fuel prices, GM should try putting DI on both Atlas engine and offer 6 speed auto.

What exactly is a waste of time and please give a reason why?

It might have enough power for you but not for me or others who may wish to tow. I'd like to see DI on all engines eventually but it seems a way off. 6 speed autos should be the "standard" now for GM.

Re: No V8 For Colorado/Canyon Until 2009

The atlas motors definately should not die. Well not the 4.2L It is so smooth. Direct inject the 4.2 and it will be easily making 350hp with better fuel economy. The 4.2 in the envoy we have is definately smoother than the 3.6 in the saturn aura. Just give it a little loving. I say put it in the silverado to replace the 4.3 and maybe the 4.8.

Also I would put the colorado and canyon the gmt360. It is still a strong chassis and by now cheap to make. You could do small changes to it to make it stronger and put the colorado on there and now you would have a very nice midsize.

Actually, the I5 is class competitive for power: chart --> small_trucks_v6.JPG

The GMT355 is rated for 5500 lbs towing for 2008, which is middle of the road for mid-sized trucks. If you need more power than is available in the class for towing, then you need to look at full-size anyhow. And nobody offers a 6spd Auto in the mid-sized trucks -- but GM did drop the ball there since the GMT355 should've been designed for it.

I was really hoping that GM would drop the tired old 4.3 V6 and stuff that sweet Atlas 4.2 I6 into the GMT900s. Bolt it up to a 6spd manual tranny, and I'd order one tomorrow.

I concur. The 4.2 in my Trailblazer is the best engine I've ever owned. It's smooth as silk and pulls like a train - even with a little over 80k on the clock.

The only problem that I saw with it was that it didn't test drive well at all. It was a little weak until I got about 1000 miles on it. After that, it really started open up. I'm not sure if that was break-in or programming.
