Re: Jalopnik: GM Killing Hummer H2 After 2011

This is a step in the right direction. Killing Hummer would be a good idea. There just doesn't exist a long term market for those kind of vehicles.

Until 2002 Jeep had this segment locked up. We then had the SUV fad and everyone became a mudder/wanna-be off roader, but that has dried up. Hummer MIGHT make it if they could differentiate themselves as the king of off-road vehicles now that Chrysler has turned Jeep into a jalopy, but Hummer has no future building moster SUVs with different bodies and interiors from the mainstream GM products.

I think this a repeat of the 70's where gas prices get bigger and the cars get smaller. I see gas hitting $6 dollars in 2 years, so driving such a beast will be reserved for the very wealthy.I have a friend that has a net worth over 4 million dollars and he complains about putting gas in his H2.

Yeah, but he keeps filling it up whenever it needs it! Thats the funny thing about rich people, they complain like they dont have 2 dimes to rub together. Yet they usually never change their practices! But its their progotive I guess.

Except this is a lot worse and we middle class americans are paying the price.

I've been saying this would happen since around 2000 or so. Ever since the HP numbers started rising, I started thinking, "We're living the 1960s over again." Average sedans like Camry went from 190 HP to 268 HP V6s. They took away our big cars--so everyone took to buying big SUVs instead. And the HP wars that were once fought on the muscle car battlefields of Detroit were now waging in Germany (AMG, BMW M, VW such as Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Italy's perennial Ferrari). With the exceptions of a few Corvettes, Vipers, Ford GTs, and Shelby Mustang GT500s, the US has largely missed the big show.

And now the gas shortages combined with increased demand (especially in other countries going forward) have lead to prices skyrocketing, global warming has lead to CAFE increases to 35mpg combined phased in by 2020, and the 1970s are finally here again. Hopefully we can deal with things a bit more intelligently this time around. I am not looking forward to cars that barely run--if at all--due to lean burn cycles starving engines into stalling, hastily slapped together diesels or other new technologies that may not be fully developed this time around. I, for one, do not relish slow ugly appliances for vehicles, and I certainly don't want it all to lead to gas lines and a collapsed economy. That's the last thing the US needs right now.

Re: Jalopnik: GM Killing Hummer H2 After 2011

I think this is my first post here I'm not sure...LOL

But, I don't see GM killing the H2 but i do see them restructuring it and hopefully a diesel option soon. The technology today is hybrid and diesel engines.

I'm not a fan of hybrids but I do like diesels especially the 6.6L Duramax.

I'm not gonna touch much on the environmentalist issues but they are playing a big role in our Govt. There mission is too take more rights away from you.

It would seem that way, wouldn't it? Too much of their effort seems to be involved in eradicating the automobile. It is where most environmentalist efforts seem to be concentrated, while failing to be upset over industrial pollution in similar proportion. That China and India were not involved in Kyoto indicates that the movement was more about destroying the Western (read American) industrial base than anything else.

As for the H2 going away, maybe GM is trying to find a graceful way out of Hummer. After all, they took what was a decidedly niche franchise and tried to turn it into a 100K a year business, and failed thus far. To be honest, I had no real regard for the H2 even before I bought a Prius as a high-tech toy. It was, like practically any vehicle nearly as tall as it is wide, in the way of my Sebring as I was attempting to take a 25 mph off ramp at 60. I'm sorry, but it will not cause me any grief if I never see another H2 again.

Re: Jalopnik: GM Killing Hummer H2 After 2011

I've seen H2s on some trails, but they were not doing anything that couldn't be done in a Tahoe Z71 or Toyota FJ.

I still love them.....hopefully we can see a new H3.

Oh nooooooo. Ok I'm over it. I love the H2 and I think it's really cool but, I can't afford one. And GM isn't selling them anyways, so it's not like a huge loss.

What a about that shiney new H2 plant at AM General? What will they build there now?

Re: Jalopnik: GM Killing Hummer H2 After 2011

Are they going to bring something to replace it?

And of all brands to model after, Jeep is not that brand. Hummer is better than that.

Well, I just bought a used H2 SUT. I've always wanted one, but they were too expensive until now. GM has some valuable brand recognition with this line-up, I hope they are smart enough to keep the brand alive.

Is the H2 still made in Mishawaka? I wonder how long the agreement is with AM General to build it there?
