Hummer Goes Off Roading

In its can-you-top-this competition with Jeep for bragging rights as the nation's premier off-road brand, Hummer will introduce a heavy-duty equipment package aimed at serious off-road enthusiasts.

Next year Hummer will offer a heavy-duty package that will be marketed under a name yet to be announced.

"You are going to see (Hummer) reach further into aggressive heavy-duty off-roading," says a General Motors source who spoke on condition that he not be identified.

The heavy-duty equipment will debut on the H1 next year and then expand to H2 and H3 models. The H3 will debut in 2005.

The equipment is expected to be different for each Hummer model.

The H1 package will include a Duramax diesel engine, Allison transmission and special off-road equipment, the source says. He did not provide details.

Jeep has adopted a similar marketing strategy with its Rubicon vehicles. For example, the Wrangler Rubicon has axles, tires and a transfer case that are not offered on other Wrangler models.

The Rubicon has the advantage of being something that the average person can afford, though. The Hummer H1 and H2 will never be in the same price bracket, so for the "serious off-roading enthusiast", it becomes rather hard to justify buying a Hummer when you could buy three Jeep Rubicons for the same price.

That pretty much sums it up.

It will be cool to have the options in all three vehicle types though. The H2 and H3 will be the more affordable vehicles of choice for enthusiasts. I am curious to see what they offer in the H3 model. Time will tell..

good to hear it, im sick of all these people saying how bad hummer is now that GM has it, this will just prove them even more that they are wrong. now i hope they just fix all that plastic on the H2 and H3. i think without that the hummer name would redeam itself so much more... even if its n :kama: ot nessary for offroading...

This is great news to me because alot of people want the Duramax to be offered in the Hummer and this will help fill that need. Hummers are expensive but people seem to like the idea of them. Good move GM.

I had an H3 sighting this evening. I was just leaving my subdivision and an H3 was coming towards me. It was all white and flat black/stripes camofluage, but it was definitely an H3. It definitely had the Hummer look, with a wagon back end, and it sat up fairly high.

After I got back (I was late taking my daughter to a class), I drove around my sub hoping whatever engineer that was driving it would have left it in his driveway (I have seen several GM models well before they are out in my sub), but it wasn't around. Otherwise you'd be looking at H3 pics now.

Maybe next time.

Well hopefully they make the Duramax a no-cost option in the H2. It just seems retarded to have a gigantic truck without a diesel.
