GMC May Get An SUV That Looks Like A Hummer To Rival Jeep Wrangler

General Motors might finally be serious about giving GMC some distinctive product, and one that would give the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler some competition.

GM is asking for feedback from GMC dealers about a new model that would go head-to-head with the Jeep and sport some cues from the defunct Hummer brand, sources close to matter told the Wall Street Journal.

Those Hummer styling cues mean this rumored GMC could bear some resemblance to the Hummer Hx concept from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show – or at least share it's open-topped spirit. That concept was also powered by a 3.6-liter V6 like the current Wrangler and within two inches of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited's length.

LOOOOOOK I don't like to get aggressive with G.M. But is kills me that GM has so much industrial and design might/power, that it seldom got utilised in the right way. This new team at GM in charge seems to get it. They also seem to get what us GM loyalists have been screaming for. We don't want to cross shop different manufactures to get what we want. If I want a Range Rover Sport Super Charged, why should I not be able to get one from Cadillac, why should I have to leave GM to get that certain type of SUV. If I want a Jeep Wrangler and boy have we almost bought a 4 door one many a time, but we held off praying GM would bring the Hummer HX -- H4 concept to reality. Why should we have to leave GM to purchase one. Keep us GM people at GM. Same goes for performance minded PONTIAC, that was killed, can we not get GM to do a performance line again to keep us gearheads here. Why should we have to run to Dodge.

Look NEW GM could save boat loads of money by doing more product tie ups with other manufacturers, like for instance GM is coming out with a Range Rover Sport competitor in 4 years, if they use the Omega platform fine, but if they don't why not do a deal with Land Rover/Range Rover, they have an amazingly light platform and use aluminum on their bodies, that's exactly where GM needs to be anyways. This would save big bucks. As for the H4 bring it as I have been screaming about for and in many articles in a 2 and 4 door variation, the 4 door will far outsell the 2 door and build it in house on the new Colorado/Canyon Platform.

GMC is the brand that can pull off a lifestyle vehicle, yes Hummer tried the H3 and Toyota tried the FJ cruiser, but they were not in the right timed market. GM right now is finding its MOJO again, now is the right time to build a true Wrangler competitor. Market is right to lifestyle people, put it in outdoor stores to showcase it Braun, Looks, Tech, Efficiency, take it to events where they do Motocross/Dirt biking - Snow Boarding - Rallying etc. This will sell this sucker like no other.

From this article which I have posted the link the source seems to state that GM is finally getting it, why let Jeep control this market, why let Jeep run away with boat loads of cash to fuel other products. GM needs to show the world that they are market leaders in every market and niche market, heck go out and create new niches. This Wrangler Competitor is exactly what GM needs to get better at, --- Doing more tough lifestyle products to compete with the Wrangler and Cherokee.

On another note, I just saw the New Ford F-150, I owned a 2011 F-150 FX4 --6 inch lift, bull bars, side steps, 37 inch Tires etc, the Fords just looked best in lifted form and just look better than anything GM ever had. Well uummmm the New F150 sure is one UGGLYYYYYYYY Truck, wow daddy hit him with a bat to hard. It is just a bad overall design. Now if GM can get their next trucks right, make them TONKA Tough, give them a more Hummer type flare, give them bigger fender flares, give them a big aggressive Vent or Shield after the Front Tire fender flare, give that passenger window area some unique design flare, give them a hood scoop look. Then GM will have the right trucks and they don't need to worry about Fords new F 150, now its the ugly duckling.

SO NEW GM ----- PLEASE keep rocking out the hits like the New Camaro, the New C7 Corvette, The New Colorado/Canyon Twins, The New Tahoe/Escalade/Yukon Twins. Get rid of Cadillac's Current design language it's killing the brand, read my other articles about that. Cadillac Design needs to be more Fluid, and still have art and science creases. round those edges some, bulge out the front fenders some and let them rise above the hood line. MMMMM that's how I see Cadillac design.. Anyways Keep it real GM, keep your ears to the ground and listen to us GM loyalist, we are the ones you want to keep and the competitor's customers will come when they see how amazing GM vehicles are starting to look, giving them everything they wanted. ONLY this time it's GM that has it all, not the competition.

Why compete with Wrangler and that hardened / loyal part of the market?
Easy solution - bring back the K5 Blazer - 1500 reg cab/sht bed pickup frame and front end, Tahoe rear fenders. Keep the front metal roof like the 80s models, add a nice lined fiberglass removable rear section - with today's engineering it will surely meet crash/roll standards with that amount of metal on top, but still be retro and fun.

Jeep is a global icon. My advice to GMC is, if you're not ready to take this thing seriously, not ready to stick with it for a long time, not committed to creating a certain image as long as that might take, then don't bother.

If you are serious and committed, then good luck with it.

I would be envisioning BOTH a Colorado "S" Jimmy AND a Sierra based "K" Jimmy
the "K" one would be the Yukon sport to tie in with the Yukon/XL would follow the same offerings as the Yukon 5 DR Just built on a short box frame with EXT cab reverse rear doors
and the "S" based on the Colorado chopped down enough to be no longer then the wrangler jeeps
and going further "pivot" the GMC offerings around those 2 "families"

Canyon
Jimmy sport - short wheel base
Jimmy 7 - 3 row 5 DR "long wheel" base global Colorado7 with USDM nose job

the Sierra/Yukons get updated to feature the all terrain show truck
Sierra
Yukon sport - the "old" K blazer
Yukon 7 - one we have now
yukon XL - again one now

Chevy offers the Colorado/Silverado in "street" sport truck styling as a way to "relive" the the sport truck movement again AND offer V8 street fun with out CAFE going in the toilet and works with aftermarket "tuner" companies to improve the engine/suspension performance/"street" appeal IE HEAVY encouragement of Camaro go-fast parts to be adapted to the truck engines

the "SOFT ROADERS" bask in the glow from the Halo truck products and follow the same design themes like Jeep is doing with there trail rated sport-cutes

I would see the street/all-terrain versions as "side" trims to you LS-LT-LTZ line up like RAM with SE-SXT-Laramie and tradesman-sportsman ETC

both trucks would be mechanically the same and sit in the similar "market position" like they do now just with more "separation" in styling to "pull" there brand themes

all good but for the V6. Heavy and big. Jeep won't sell a 4-cyl diesel Wrangler in the US; GM could capitalize on this. Torquey and small, and just plain cool. GM let Chrysler Corp beat them in bringing diesel to half-ton pickups, but there's a glimmer of hope in that the Canyon and Colorado seem poised to be the first in the mid-sized segment. The V6 has always seemed to me like a minivan's engine in a Wrangler.

GMC does not have to “out-Jeep” Jeep to succeed in the hot global “SUV Segment” since most sales in that segment are not “Hard Core” Off-Road vehicles.

GMC has more than enough “Brand Presence” to succeed as long GMC gets products true to GMC’s “Professional Grade” image and where GMC can expand it’s highly successful “Denali” trims by creating new trims like “Scyclone” for high performance on-road performance vehicles and “Alpha” for Hard Core Off-Road vehicles. Jeep uses a similar strategy with “SRT” and “TrailHawk” Jeep trims but does not currently have an answer to GMC’s Denali.

GMC can create (2) “Wrangler” competitors with a Safari model in Safari 2-Door (HX/Wrangler 2D), Safari 4-Door (Wrangler 4D) and add a Safari XL (H3) model with up to 7 passenger seating for (3) vehicles from a single architecture.

Safari would available in Denali and Alpha trim similar to Jeep’s Wrangler Rubicon and Hummer H3 Alpha.

GMC can create a Yukon “K5” using the “Alpha” trim to create an “Off-Road” capable Yukon from the current 116” WB 4-Door to evaluate the segment and add a 110” WB Yukon in either 2-Door or a “4-Door using rear hinged “Extended Cab” doors for better rear seat access similar to the K5 Concept noted by several members from a few years ago.

GMC must expand the Yukon line by adding “Syclone” and “Alpha” trims to it’s existing line along with a 121” WB Yukon-L added between the existing 116” WB Yukon and 130” WB Yukon XL models as well as a 143.5” WB Yukon XXL with 4th row seating for up to 10 passenger capacity.

The 110”, 121”(H2) and 130” (H1) WB models would get “Alpha” trims similar to Hummer brand styling.

“Syclone” trims with lowered suspensions/MRC would be added to Canyon, Envoy, Sierra and Yukon lines.

The Envoy would be available in two models Envoy (Grand Cherokee) and Envoy XL (Durango/Wagoneer) in all three premium trims Syclone, Alpha and Denali.

Largest increase in GMC lineup needs to be in FWD/AWD SUV’s for the massive global sales growth that only GMC can deliver for GM. This lineup starts with the “A-Class” Jimmy in gas/diesel and Electric Jim-E versions the size of the current Fiat Panda and an upcoming Jeep variant. The Granite name can be used for a Renegade competitor and Borrego for next gen Jeep Compass with Terrain expanding trims to better compete with Cherokee. Acadia tops the FWD/AWD line with more SUV-like styling to better compete with Explorer.

GMC can attract attention of Urban buyers and the Off-Road crowd with the in gas/diesel and Electric powered Graphyte Buggy in RWD using FWD from Granite.

Re: GMC Mulls Jeep Wranger Rival

GMC’s main advantage over Jeep is that it has viable Truck and Van models to augment it’s SUV’s, where GMC can offer the Canyon and Sierra into new global markets along with all new Combo, Savanna and Express in-house designed vans.

GMC then becomes GM’s global SUV, Truck and Van brand that compliments Buick in China and U.S. and where China becomes GMC’s first global market expansion taking full advantage of Buick’s strong market presence and dealer distribution network. Shared Buick/GMC models would be Adam Rocks/Jimmy, Encore/Granite, Envision/Terrain, Rendezvous/Terrain XL and Rainer/Acadia.

GMC adds their vehicles to Opel/Vauxhall dealers in Western and Eastern Europe where they share dealer showrooms with Adam Rocks, Mokka, Antara and new Opel/Vauxhall SUV’s to counter Jeep and fully cover new SUV segments in Europe. Middle East/Turkey markets are covered with an expanded GMC line where GMC does well.

Japan sees a return of Opel along with GMC for a line that has GM’s best chance of sales in this tough for foreign brand market. Holden picks the best of what Buick/GMC/Opel offer to create it’s SUV, Truck and Van lines with GMC tapping into Holden’s expertise in Off-Road SUV/Truck development and can see Holden possibly getting back into the game after 2020 with a unique SUV model. GMC needs to enter the South American market along with Opel when it’s lineup is fully expanded.

GMC’s full global potential is year’s away and will deliver GM’s highest return on investment since it’s “cost of entry” are nearly zero since it’s distribution costs are already “paid for” and GMC can build sales with low cost “word of mouth” and social media.

Today’s customers are looking for a “new” brand they can call their own the is not a volume brand so they can “be who they are” and that sometimes covers many sectors and why GM’s tagline of “Professional Grade” works so well when offering vehicles with CUV MPG, Electric, Hybrid, Small, Medium, Full Size and HD Truck, Commercial Van, High Tech Mobile Office/Luxury Van, Urban Van, Urban SUV, Performance On-Road with SUV/Truck/Van utility, Hard Core Off Road SUV/Truck and Luxury SUV/Truck/Van segments.

GMC has all of the requirements for Global success, Brand Strength, Strong and flexible Marketing, “Brand Exclusivity” across segments, Brand does not make cars to dilute image, Brand with lineup in fastest growing global segments of SUV/Truck, Brand capable of offering Medium Duty trucks in Class 4 to 7 segments and Brand capable of selling luxury SUV/Truck and even Vans with established Denali trim.

It bears repeating that GMC is the only brand in the industry with the capability to deliver the volume of high margin sales revenue and has no direct competitors and that can truly counter GMC. GMC has a ready-made global distribution network waiting to be used to generate that income and only needs fed product. GMC is GM’s only brand with triple digit global sales volume growth potential and is GM’s only true “Global Brand”.
