GMC Confirms V8 Engine Option for Canyon

GMC Confirms V8 Engine Option for CanyonBy: Mike Levine Posted: 09-14-07 16:02 PT

We first reported back in June that sources at General Motors were telling us an eight cylinder engine option was coming for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon - the same small block 5.3-liter 295-horsepower / 317 lb-ft V8 that's powering the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha.
Well, now it's official - though probably not in quite the way GM hoped to make this long-anticipated announcement.
Head over to GMC's website to check out the specs for the 2008 GMC Canyon. Under 'Engines' you'll see the currently available 2.9-liter I4, 3.7-liter I5, and an, "Available V8 engine (available early 2008)."

Asked about this public display of powertrain intent, a GMC spokesperson told PickupTruck.com, "Yes. A V8 for the Canyon is coming in early 2008."
The spokesperson would not confirm the displacement or exact timing of the engine but sources tell us to expect this as an option by February 2008 for both two wheel and four wheel drive pickups.
The Canyon and Colorado twins now join the Dodge Dakota, Ford Explorer Sport Trac, and Mitsubishi Raider as the only midsize pickups to offer V8 engines.

Re: GMC Confirms V8 Engine Option for Canyon

It needs something, I had a 24,000 km 2005 Canyon trade in with a 5 cyl.

I could not sell it because it seemed so rough running compared to a 4.0L Ranger. Price also contributed to it,20 g's verses 24 g's at 0%.

But I had 1 "Total GM guy" come and test drive it, I sold him his first Ford product, even had to convince him to leave his money in the bank and finance the new Ranger at 0%

NVH seems to be harsh, and loud.

Yeah, these could really rock with a GMT-900 style make over.

My thoughts exactly. Back in the day, I had a 1991 S10, 1998 S10, and a 2002 Sonoma....every single one with the 4.3 liter V6 (the biggest available), rear wheel drive, and STANDARD CAB. There was no other way I'd want the truck, and if it wasn't available that way I wouldn't have gotten any of them brand new.

If GM offers (offered) the V8 in a Standard Cab configuration with RWD, I would strongly consider it, and probably would buy one. But if it is extended or Crew Cab only, I'll pass.

No reg cab V8, but it is standard with the ZQ8 option. My wife already gave me permission to buy one and they are supposed to be out in the spring. X-cab, 2wd, 4.10 rear end with lock diff ZQ8, otherwise bare bones. Should haul some serious booty.

Yea, that kinda sucks to have two payments, but my Sonoma's aging, with 110k and almost 10yrs old. I have never had a new one for myself, only for the wife, and my plans to do the V8 swap are really just fantasy. Besides, the truck would still be old. But now with the 5.3 Canyon, its a reality, except better because its factory. This also depends on some finacial things that I hope come down the pipe next year, so I have my fingers crossed.

Re: GMC Confirms V8 Engine Option for Canyon!

This is awesome news!!!!! Although in terms of the Canyon's marketability i do think this might be too little too late it'll still be a great vehicle.

I just hope it:

1) Is available in Regular Cab

2) Doesn't have the 4 second delay

Re: GMC Confirms V8 Engine Option for Canyon

This is good but to avoid the guzzler tax a companion 5 speed trans or overdrive would be better

I'm suprised they would mention the V8 at all until they dump all the '07 3.7L trucks clogging the lots.

Is that new wheels on the truck as well? Wow

For the V8 version they better be dropping in a six speed tranny.

Hope it's not too potent. Cuz I have a feeling that if you did some serious towing with a strong V8...you would twist that flimsy frame in two! LOL
