Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
Before the manual disappeared off the option list you could get the 8.1 with the 6 speed do it yourself transmission.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
I dont see how this is a big deal, gm will shut down for retooling! Makes sense to me!

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
sounds more like a pain in the a$$ to me. Hopefully someone figures a way to by pass this with after market exhaust.
but why not ramp up production or add a third shift before shutdown to make more engines to compensate for those not made during down time?

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
You do realize that basically ALL US diesels will have Urea injection?
Only the very small diesel engines <2.0 liters can really get away with not using urea SCR.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
What I've heard is that Dodge's non-chassis cab trucks technically don't meet 2010 emissions requirements, but will be legal for sale because Dodge built up a so-called emissions bank by making the pre-2010 trucks cleaner than required. Basically, the pre-2010 trucks have a lean NOX trap (LNT) which absorbs NOX during lean operation and then, every minute or two, converts the NOX to N2, CO2, and H20 by having the engine run rich for a few seconds. The LNT system added cost and complexity to the pre-2010 trucks that Ford and GM didn't have, but will pay off somewhat by allowing 2010 trucks to not need urea injection. However, LNT systems aren't as efficient at cleaning the exhaust of NOX as SCR (Urea) systems. So, eventually, all Dodge trucks will likely have urea injection.

refill the urea... hmmm...Coors in...urea out. Yeah, I know it has less than the ideal amount of the acid, but the tank will be full!

![]() Well, you could certainly try. Would look a little strange to passers by... it would look like you were urinatin' in the gas tank. There's no doubt in my mind that somebody is going to do this.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months
I believe this is more of a "Cash on Hand" thing than an engine thing.
From what I read, Manufactures can build as many diesels as possible up until Jan 1st, and install them in trucks after that date, until they run out. The problem is GM cannot afford to pay Isuzu to stock pile engines like this. |
