That they are.

I'm curious as to why the federal government is pushing this so far. I think clean diesel is a great stepping stone to other alternative fuels.

The Duramax, in many ways, is cleaner and more efficient than the gas alternative.

Hopefully the new one won't dissapoint in the mileage department, but it's almost as if these new regs are designed to phase out diesel engines.

I never understood the appeal of that engine over the Duramax, to be honest (if the diesel option was available to you). I know a couple of people with them who have to add over a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. They have great power (still way short of the D-Max at the time)...but no thanks on the 12 mpg.

Not to mention the lack of power at higher elevations....

As for the new regs and pricing - it is getting to be nuts, I was really hoping they would put the 4.5 in the HD Chassis, that would have been my next truck (I figured at least $1500 cheaper since they don't have to use the Allison). Same power as my 2002 LB7, but 5 mpgs better. Whoever comes out with that kind of package first (my money is on Ford) will get my business for my next truck. I just rolled 131,000 last week so I will probably be looking in 18-24 months - Cummins is still shopping their v-8 around too, who knows where that will end up.

The new Duramax needs to be class leading. Nothing less should be acceptable.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months

FYI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Duramax is not the only diesel using urea in 2010. They all are. Only one figured out a way not to use it is Navistar. That means Ford uses it and so does Dodge, Mercedes and everyone else. Have you seen the information on the new Ford diesel? Sounds a lot like GM's 5.4 diesel.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months

Is this the new-all-new Duramax that was put on hold a few months back? The one that was supposed to be ground-breaking in every way?

Or is this a re-tooling of the old engine?

No that engine is 4.5 or 4.9. This is getting the 6.6 to meet the government regs.

Thanks for polluting the environment for a 20 hp gain. Do you still throw used motor oil into the storm water drain? Did you take off the mufflers to piss of your neighbors too? You could do these "no-brainer" moves too!

Actually, the 8.1 also required the allison transmission, so it was more like $3000.

Re: GM to stop Duramax diesel output for 4½ months

Why on Earth was urea even deemed a good option?? Why couldn't they find some other way to meet the regulations without making consumers pay for yet another thing that has to be maintained.

This makes me love my Cummins diesel even more!!

Diesel is the only way to go when you need to tow or just plain use a truck as a truck was intended.

Our Cummins gets great mileage on normal days (20-21 avg. for daily commutes on highways and city streets to work) and when we tow about 6000-7000lbs at highway speeds (13-15 avg. at 70 mph)

This engine also has great power and longevity...a gas engine would eat more fuel, provide less power, and probably not last as long. We also change our own oil so the maintenance costs are really not that bad.

Ford is using Urea, Dodge is not (except for the chassis cab trucks) - the current Cummins trucks they are selling right now are 2010 compliant for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks (non-chassis cabs)
