GM Silverado/Sierra pickups challenge the competition

To mark the availability General Motors' latest heavy-duty GMT900 full-size trucks, the automaker invited us out to its Milford Proving Ground to drive its big trucks along with all of the competition. GM had a variety of both light and heavy-duty full-size trucks with gasoline and diesel engines on hand. For comparison they brought along F-150s and Super Duties from Ford, Rams from Dodge, Tundras from Toyota and Titans from Nissan. The Super Duty, Tundra and Titan were all 2008 models

In spite of rising gas prices and a sagging housing market, the market for full-size pickups is still a huge segment of the overall market. So far through the first five months of 2007, over 900,000 full-size pick up trucks have been sold representing over 13% of the total market and $60 billion in annual revenue. The last number is the reason why the domestics put so many resources into developing new trucks, and Nissan and Toyota want a piece of that pie.

Read all about how the latest GM trucks did against their competitors after the jump...

I particulary like this little blurb "Bottom line: if you ever plan to tow a boat up a slippery boat ramp, avoid the Tundra,." because pulling boats is what Toyota is trying to position the Turda for here in Hawaii.

Silly comparison; comparing HD GMs and HD Fords to a Tundra or Titan is not very relevant.

Wow. I liked this article very much, and even read the whole thing in great detail. It really showed which truck was the "real truck" underneath in the DNA and which ones were imposters in truck like clothing. I particularly liked the part about the traction control / ESP/ and ABS of the Silverado versus the weaker and less competent competition. Also design elements/flaws that Toyota has no experience of like the hinges that hold on the back seats in a crew cab and the bolts in the bed. Good stuff GM.

Wow, they really picked apart the "truck that's changing it all"

I still don't understand why anyone, even previous tundra owners would buy this pos, it is clearly not even as good as the old tundra.

Because it has a 400 hp engine available in a regular cab, duh. Didn't you know thats what pick up trucks are all about.

Re: GM Silverado/Sierra pickups challenge the competition

That was a good review and GREAT idea from GM to bring the competition to their proving grounds to show that the Silverado and Sierra are truly the best trucks you can buy right now!

I love who they revealed "the truck thats chaning it all" (Tundra) for what it really is! GM needs to use this on TV to show that the Tundra is NOT what Toyota says it is!

Wait till the Silverado and Sierra gets the 6-speed autos that are going to be coming out soon.. then the Tundra is really going to be trash.

It just underscores Toyota's arrogance. They think they can sell sub-standard vehicles, makes tons of cash by skimping on the little details - all because they are "Toyota".

This article really shows how the Tundra sucks in practical use.
