GM to build two hybrid SUVs in Texas

Reuters
Automotive News / February 1, 2006 - 9:00 am

DETROIT -- General Motors said on Wednesday it will build Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon hybrid sport-utility vehicles at its Arlington, Texas, plant in late 2007.

The hybrid system is being advanced and adapted by BMW, DaimlerChrysler AG and GM for use in cars, trucks and SUVs.

GM, the world's largest automaker, also said it will produce the world's first light-duty integrated hybrid transmission, to be designed and built at its Baltimore, Maryland, transmission plant.

Re: GM Selects Texas Plant For SUV Hybrid

While no one cares where the hybrids will be built, the real story here is that the Arlington, Texas plant will apparently survive.

Of the other two SUV plants, I think Silao in Mexico is a keeper due to lower costs.

That leaves Janesville...

The light duty tranny goes into the Utes. Deceiving? Yes, but the heavy duty hybrid tranny goes into buses. Now it makes sense, right?

i'm sure gm could put the same system that's in the vue into other ecotec powered cars without a problem once they get production up and running.

Absolutely. It's a very compact design and is easily adaptable to 6-cylinders as well, not just Ecotecs.

Re: GM Selects Texas Plant For SUV Hybrid

So where else would they have built it? The GMT900 SUVs are built exclusively in Arlington, aren't they? I thought GM stopped production at the plants that built the old Tahoe and Yukon.

The transmission they are referring to is for the hybrid SUVs. It's good to see the transmissions coming from a US factory, and the hybrids coming from one of the US factories.

Bad news Mr. Tuna,

There probably won't be a Maxx hybrid, as there won't be a Maxx very soon...

Edmunds: Malibu Maxx Is History

I want them to put it into a Cobalt, then the gas should be better than a regualer Civic's.

You would think GM would do that! It seems like a no brainer. You have the hardware. People who buy Escalades would seem more than happy to buy a Hybrid version for a couple bucks more
