How much the 0%/72 is worth to an individual depends on stuff like how much you finance, what the next lowest rate you can get vs. the alternative cashback amount. You also must let the loan run the full term to get the full benefit. Its also a good idea to get gap insurance, since you WILL be upside down for most of the loan, though I think the cost of gap insurance is not huge.

My credit union currently will give me a 72 mo. loan for 4.69%. Now 60 mos. is the longest term loan I have ever gotten in the past, & I was willing to have the nominally higher interest rate to retain the option of having a low payment should I choose not to add to the principal for a given month. I paid it off early, and plan on doing so on the one I have currently. I just can’t go that long with car payments.

So, invoice + destination for one of the Trailblazer LT’s that is stacking up on dealer lots is ~$28,683. Subtract $3,500 cash, $500 conquest, $1,500 GM card & you’re down to $23,183. I think the new vehicle tax in Crook county where I live is 7% & tag/title is ~$200, so it would be $25,005 OTD. I would put down everything I can sell my Civic for, and judging from what they go for around here I will get $5,000. So I would be financing $20,005 at 4.69%. Cost of that loan would be $2,985. Now, anyone who knows a lick about math knows that a few extra payments will knock the end cost down considerably, and I ALWAYS pay early, be it car loan, mortgage, whatever. So in short, even if I let the loan go out all six years without knocking out ANY extra principal, then the answer to your second question is no, 0%/72 is not worth $3,500. Its potentially worth $2,985 at most to me, considerably less in fact since I typcically pay loans off early.

I suppose if I financed the whole amount & let the loan go over the entire term, the cost of the loan would be $3,731, so it techically could be worth more than the cash on the hood, but that’s not how I work.

You know what? I know what you’re going to say: “You weren’t going to buy one anyway!”

You what else? You are right. I am not in the market for an SUV. I do like them and still have my second one, but I was not planning on buying another when I replace my Civic—the cost is not worth the benefit to me, and that is not a big deal. The only way I will buy another SUV is if the cost goes down, i.e. more incentives. I think I might be part of a growing segment of the population, judging by trends in SUV sales.

It looks like I have a 2 month wait before I even start shopping, so I have time to sit & watch if the pot gets sweetened.

Edit: Forgot to mention, at a total cost hovering around $28K no matter how you slice it above for a 360, it is not a value to me. The total cost would need to be about $5,000 less for me, all things considered.

I would just buy a used 08 and finance it through your credit union. So what if it has 5 months of warranty gone...big deal. We are selling US-purchased 08 LT's for like $24000CDN (which is like $18000 US-'VEHICLE'-dollars)
$13kUSD (minus your $5k for your Civic) done at 4.69 throurgh your CU is a heck of a deal!

Just because it has $9,500 on the hood, doesn't make that GM's profit. They could be losing a fortune but need to move the merchandise due to dealer hostility and agreements made with suppliers for minimum volume, etc.

My GUESS is that the dealers pay at least 75-80% of MSRP and GM potentially adds in more money in the form of rebates, promotionals, etc depending on sales climate.

I will be looking into that too. I am fortunate to know of an excellent local Cadillac-Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer, some real stand-up guys there.

Can you give me a website or where to find out about the $7,000 owner loyalty? I keep searching the web and keep finding old cash loyalties from January.
thank you!

On top of the fact that as a Canadian citizen, you cant finance through US institutions so your stuck with getting a loan from your own bank.
And you still pay all the a/c and gas taxes once you hit Canada Customs too...

Not exactly true.

You can bring just about any new or used vehicle into Canada, as long as you can find a dealer willing to sell to you, and as long as it’s on the RIV list of importable vehicles. There is no requirement that the vehicle was plated before import. I have imported new and used vehicles.

GM does require all imported vehicles to be 6 months old, and have over 12,000 KM’s before they will honour your warranty in Canada. If your vehicle is newer than this, US dealers have no problem doing the warranty work. I have imported many makes, including GM trucks. GM does void your roadside assistance. After the 6 months/12000km’s, you have full GM warranty.

You may have to pay the a/c tax, but you only pay PST & GST on the US purchase price (converted to CAN), so you save thousands on taxes. Before GM was offering these incentives, you could save well over $10K by importing a truck. The savings increase as the vehicle price increases. On the large SUV’s, you use to be able to save over $20K a few months ago. I havn't calculated the savings in the last couple of months, so I can't comment on the savings today.

Sorry to jump off topic here.

Perusing AutoTrader, I find it amusing the delusional prices some people who are trying to dump their H3's (and there are lot of them) are asking.

News flash: A new H3 is no more than $30K. If you can get someone to offer you over $20K for your used one consider yourself fortunate.

Oh well... when they've still got it next year reality will set in. I personally wouldn't get interested untill they're closer to $10K...

I like H3s and would like to get back into the off-road thing but there's no way I could justify purchasing one new.

Then wait a little while. Used H3's are going to be a very attractive proposition.
I smell a bargain starting about 6 months out... the shock of all this hood cash hasn't quite set in yet.

Probably a smart move.

I love the Alphas myself, in particular the 2-tone gray/beige interiors.
IMO, the beige seats with the gray piping are sharp looking.

A look on AutoTrader last week had just two H3 Alphas priced in the high $30K's.
Just a week later reality starts to set in... there's a dozen under $30K.

Still, good luck to those sellers. It's not gonna stop there...

Re: GM Puts $ 7,000+ Cash On The Hood Of A $ 31,340 H3

Hi all - been lurking on this forum for a while now... great reading!
I took the plunge and decided to test drive an H3 and I absolutely LOVE it.

Dealer gave me an out the door price on a base model with nothing except auto and tow package of 25k.

I was hoping there was another rebate or some type of dealer cash that would bring that closer to 23k.

While I don't argue that 25K is a great price for this vehicle - it's still a few K above our intial budget.

I wasn't looking at Hummer's but since they're throwing this 7k at me.. perhaps they can squeeze a bit more?

What do you think? is there another 1500 cash somewhere or is 25k out the door my best price ?

Ford put $11000 of incentives on the Explorer a couple months ago and my local dealer still has yet to sell one. I would wait, I am sure GM will go even further with the incentives on trucks.
