Agreed. I personally would like to see GM produce 2 trucks and 2 SUVs in this category (Chevy and Hummer), but given the realities of the current marketing channel configuration, I think they might have to build three of each.

NfamousZ24, despite the tough rhetoric on this site with respect to UAW workers, I still do wish you well; I hope you land softly if you get laid off.
I am not worried, I am positive I will be laid off for a month max. It is just after 9-09-09 about the time they are scheduled to stop building the GMT360's

I did get one of my goals done which was to get my wife through her 5 year teaching degree. She is even teaching in our home town that we grew up in and live today. She can now take the bread winner role....for now. lol

FYI for the people that don't know I am not UAW. We are http://http://iue798.com/ @ Moraine Assembly. We are still in negotiations in our contract. Also when I said when the sweepers/janitors will retire soon. Unlike UAW that took a lower teir for their sweepers. IUE has already agreed to Outsource. The new contracted company starts Dec. 17th. Then the sweepers about 90 of them will flow back to the line on Jan 2nd when we come back to work from Winter break. I am 6th in line to be called back.

Re: GM to lay off 340 @ Moraine Assembly

GM is doing the right thing by going to just one BOF platform GMT900. The Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade will be fine to pick up these buyers as an Envoy is almost as long as a Yukon...just not as wide. GM might even be able to make a shorter version of the Tahoe such as the old blazer if the market wants it. One less platform will save a ton of R&D and make yet another factory redundant. This means the Saab needs a replacement along the lines of a Lambda (I think a GMT900 is too big for them at this time). Isuzu is just SOL. Maybe the money saved can be used to update the Colorado/Canyon/H3/Equinox and Torrent as they are starting to really show their age.

Actually I think Lambda is too big for Saab as well, considering they're really really close in terms of interior space to the Tahoe/Suburban. GM must agree with me, because the Saab 9-4 will be on the Theta/Epsilon platform shared with the Cadillac BRX, and much smaller than the Lambda.

It's too bad that GM couldn't do something with their BOF SUVs like what Nissan did. The F-Alpha platform underpins all of their BOF trucks, but it's slightly shrunken for the Frontier, Pathfinder, and XTerra and full size for the Armada/QX56 and Titan. That would help spread out development costs.

Re: GM to lay off 340 @ Moraine Assembly

we are getting more and more requests for 4cyl or smaller than equinox suvs here at the dealership. i think we are losing a lot of people to the smaller crv, kia and hyundai suv's. trailblazers are dead on the lot and we have gotten a few early snowfalls which is weird. something vue size or smaller w/ an efficient 4cyl is what we need. we are dropping the ball on this market.

Thumbs down Re: GM to lay off 340 @ Moraine Assembly

Just to clarify.............I bought an 08 Envoy. I traded an 04 Chevy Colorado Z-71. Although I bought the Envoy because I didn't need a pickup any longer.....I was dead set at not buying an 08 Colorado because for 1) the Colorado was a poor excuse for a pickup and 2) GM had not made any changes to the truck other than a different selection of colors.
I have an 07 Impala. If GM doesn't change/improve the Impala in 2010 or 2011, I will not spend money to buy the same car in a different color.
Getting back to the TraiBlazer/Envoy..............it's no wonder people don't want this fine vehicle. Improve it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make subtle sheet metal changes............do something rather than offering a choice of light black one year and dark gray another!!!!!!!!!!!!
