I think Kenya is the only country with a national park adjacent to its capitol. Although the park's future seems uncertain due to ceaseless construction in Nairobi.

There is an airport next to it on the city side and a fence and ranches without fences all around, so its pretty well protected, Kenyans love their national parks

There isn't too much infrastructure or support in North Africa to have many vehicles around. South Africa seems more industrialized and has more technology, so there are more vehicles sold there. But yeah, it IS a bit surprising.

Re: GM: Hummer now Available in Kenya

I thought range rover/land rovers were the vehicle of choice troughout the world for the simple fact you can get parts any where. If I am in the bush and I need a part fast, I doubt the local shop will have a part for a hummer. I guess that's why there is DHL and fedex. Its like the dummies around me who buy mini coopers. Fine, until you need warranty work. Buh bye. Have fun driving 75 miles to the dealer! Suckers!!! Which brings me to ford, why can't any ford dealer service a mazda? Or a volvo, or a jag, etc.? Makes no sense.

Try Toyota Landcruisers, they ARE the vehicle of choice. Prior to that in the 1960's and early 1970's the Land Rover.

I think that many people (myself included) have the idea that Africa is all desserts, war, and poor starving people. Unfortunately that's all we ever really hear of Africa, but obviously (as mbukukanyau points out) this isn't the case. Thanks for sharing that!

Wow, thanks for all the pictures! Are you in any of them? I'm surprised that everything is in English! Also, I didn't realise that the cars were on the left side of the road!!! Is it like that all over Africa? Even in the North? I really didn't think so.

Re: GM: Hummer now Available in Kenya

^^ In former British Africa (except Nigeria) it's on the left; in former French Africa it's on the right. Nigeria switched from left to right to be like it's Franco neighbors. I don't know about the North.

Re: GM: Hummer now Available in Kenya

Thanks for the pics post, mbuku....

I've been to Kenya and they're the friendliest people alive! Kenyans are are also very modest, humbling, funny, astute, and incredibly polite people. I have great respect for them. And other than the sad squatter camps, Nairobi is a very modern and extremely clean city.

I've got two questions though:

Firstly, what's the size of the new car market in Kenya? I tried to dig up some data, but can't find anything.

And secondly, what the hell does mbukukanyau mean? I asked one of my students, who is half French, half Kenyan, and he had no idea! Although he admitted his Swahili isn't the best it could be since his father usually only speaks it when he's angry!
