The 4L60E tranny in my then new '94 Z28 had to be replaced twice in 17K miles. My ex-wife did me a favor by totalling it out about 3K miles later. That car was a complete lemon.

Re: Edmunds' Long Term 2007 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

i would say a little on edmunds for screwing up the tranny, my supposed unreliable tranny in my 99 is still running strong after 10 years and 115000 in a suburban, and yes it tows and plays, and i do not baby my vehicle, my brothers 01 is strong and the old mans 07 NBS crew cab 6.0 is great. and is it not the 4L60E (i know my 3.4DOHC was)that is attached to the reliable 3.8 I know of plenty that have turned out 250,000 plus on standard maintenance

I've got a 4L60E in my Z and i've got a shift kit in it that will break the tires loose from all the way up to 4th gear, and this is the first I have ever heard of them being "weak and unreliable" been shifting that way for 4 years now, and not once have I ever been even slightly worried. The 4L60E shares like 90% of it's internals with the Turbo 350, a VERY reliable tranny.

GM makes the best automatics. Always have. From the Powerglide, to the Turbo 350/400 to the 200r4/700r4 all the way to the 4L60E/4L80E etc.

Ford, now there's some "weak and unreliable" tranny's. So many tranny failures during my 8 years at the Ford Dealer, that I would never buy a Ford because of it. (well that and the whole randomly bursting into flames thing)

This Silverado they were testing, if they missed the recall, then thats one thing, but it's more likely that they had one tester who pounded the crap out of that truck, to intentionally break it. A much more likely scenario.

I have replaced a 4 speed myself, although not in a truck.

Also, I have driven several Siverado's, and I know exactly what they mean regarding that delayed response coming out of that annoying deactivation mode...and it seems like forever. I would say a good 2 second delay....at the absolute worst time, when you need a quick downshift and getaway.

yeah, power is nice, but power not channeled through an efficient AT, combined with a huge delay - is not exactly an optimal advantage.

AFM doesn't cause that delay. It is GM's wonderful torque management that causes the delay.

Hey guys I heard that the Chevy HHR has had some transmission problems can anyone tell me if it is the automatic? I think the problems on this tranny were the 2006 and 2007 models.

Transmissions are minor flaws.. lol. My trans went out right after my Silverado's warranty went out. Frustrating as is. aside from it's cheap interior, wobbling frame and that one lil gearbox wich was just a minor prob It was a good truck.

I sold my 94 Z-28 with 114,000 miles on it a few years ago, after 7 1/2 years of ownership (bought it new) - never had a single transmission problem. I am feeling lucky after reading these posts!

Re: Edmunds' Long Term 2007 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

After the issues I had with my '94 Z28, I made sure that every F-Body I bought after that had the 6-speed manual. When it came time to buy my '06 GTO, I didn't even consider an automatic one. And if/when I ever get around to buying a Corvette, it won't be an automatic one either.

I put 60,000 miles on an A4 C5 Vette with no problems before I sold it. My current Vette with the A6 has had no problems. Hopefully they have fixed the problems that you had.
